Storm takes sole possession of NSC lead

The Whitefish Bay-Nicolet-Shorewood (WNS) Storm took sole possession of first place in the North Shore Conference and a major step toward the conference title with a convincing 4-1 win over visiting Homestead Highlanders Saturday at the Kern Center. WNS out shot Homestead 43-27.

The Storm held the Highlander’s top line in check for the majority of the game. Thomas Fazio gave the Highlanders a lead early in the first period when his low wrist shot slipped past WNS goalie Sean Leahy and trickled into the net. The Storm would respond before the end of the period when WNS’s Djordje Torbica blasted a slapshot past the glove of Homestead goalie Killian Martin, knotting the score at 1-1.

WNS got two quick scores mid-way through the second period to gain control of the game. Thomas Aiken’s shot from the point off the draw made it 2-1 and Torbica scored only seconds later with a hard wrister from just inside the blue line to extend the lead.

Sean Leahy’s sprawling save on a semi-breakaway and ensuing rebound attempt early in the third period preserved the margin. The Storm put the game out of reach when WNS's Drew Kneisel and Andy Krugler skated in on a 2-on-2, and Krugler deflected in Kneisel’s feed over the pads of Martin.

WNS improved to 10-1-0 on the season with the win.
