MERRILL - On paper, Saturday night's boys' hockey game between Rhinelander and Merrill seemed evenly matched, but as the game progressed, the odds were more and more stacked against the Hodags.
Reduced to a gossamer-thin bench because of injuries, and facing a one-goal deficit entering the third period, Rhinelander fought back. The Hodags scored three times in the third, including Ben Franson's go-ahead goal with 4:10 remaining, and fought back to defeat Merrill 4-2 at the Smith Center.
Rhinelander only has 12 skaters and two goalies on its roster to begin with. Three of those skaters - Brett Estabrook, Cody Vinger and Kyle Thronton - missed Saturday's contest, and Bryce Luebke left the game late in the second period after receiving hard contact to the head.
