Freshman stops 18 in first varsity effort

Marshfield freshman Lexi Dupee is used to scoring goals.

Friday night, she had to stop them. Pressed into emergency goalie service when regular netminder Alexis Straughan had to sit out due to a concussion, Dupee didn't always look pretty, but stopped 18 shots in a 6-3 victory over the Point-Rapids Red Panthers at the Marshfield Youth Ice Arena.

It didn't take long for the hosts to put a number on the scoreboard. Senior Paige Johnson, who played every position on the ice except for 'G,' scored when she grabbed her own rebound and beat Red Panther goalie Emily Bubla between the post and right goalie pad at 1:06 of the first.

Play went back and forth for most of the period, but the visitors knotted the score late in the stanza when Rachel Metz reached behind Dupee and tapped in a loose puck at 14:56, with assists to Sarah Peplinski and Amanda Milanowski.

The home squad held a 13-7 shot advantage in the period.

After a scoreless first half of the middle period, the Red Panthers scored on Taylor Grimm's shot from the low slot area. Metz earned a helper on the score at 9:42 that gave the guests a short-lived 2-1 lead.

While on a power play less than two minutes later, the Tigers' Nell Eichten scored on a shot from the right circle that trickled off Bubla's glove and fell into the goal to tie the score at the 11:12 mark. Johnson earned an assist on the play.

Just over two minutes later, Point-Rapids took another penalty and the Tigers called time out to set up a power play. Although the plan ate up most of the 'man advantage' time, Eichten was successful when she knocked in a rebound from the low left side at 15:21 with assists to Johnson and Molly Schuster for a 3-2 lead.

The period ended shortly after, with the Tigers outshooting the Red Panthers 9-7 in the period.

The Tigers nudged the lead to 4-2 just under five minutes into the final period when Patty Jo Bloczynski punched in a rebound after a furious scrum behind the net. Melissa Alcorta received an assist on the play.

Midway through the period, a shot from the left circle by the Red Panthers' Hannah Beilke bounced off a player or two on the way to the net and hit the outside of the left post before trickling harmlessly into the corner.

Twenty-three seconds later, a shot from nearly the same spot did find the back of the net. Milanowski earned the goal, while the helper was given to Nicole Krueger to make the score 4-3 at the 7:43 mark.

The Red Panthers had a power play chance just over a minute later but were unable to convert.

Bubla came off for an extra attacker with 1:21 left, and Johnson took advantage of that by scoring not one, but two, empty-netters in the last minute of play to seal the deal.

The Tigers had a 10-7 shot margin the period.

Dupee--who found out 24 hours earlier she would be manning the crease--stopped 18 shots in her first goaltending action since a couple of U14 games last year.

Bubla made 26 saves in the loss.

Marshfield improves to 5-4-1 (2-0-1 in Great Northern Conference play), while the Red Panthers drop to 3-4 (2-1 GNC).

The Tigers travel to play the Northern Edge on Tuesday, while the Red Panthers host Lakeland the same evening.
