Three first-period goals hold up for Robins

The Antigo Red Robins scored three first-period goals and then held off the Lakeland Thunderbirds for a 3-1 win in a Great Northern Conference match-up at the Langlade County Ice Arena Tuesday night.

Joe Kubacki put the Robins on the board early, just 3:20 into the period. Dan Will battled for the puck in the right corner, then fired a pass to Kubacki in the slot. Kubacki's one-timer beat Lakeland goalie Jacob Baxter cleanly on the stick side.

The Robins increased their lead when Zach Fleischman picked off an errant pass just outside the blue line, then entered the Lakeland zone along the right boards. He got down to the faceoff circle and cut across the slot and fired a wrist shot over Baxter's left shoulder for a 2-0 Robin lead with 5:38 left in the period.

Antigo scored one more time, with just 5 seconds left in the first. Jackson Charlesworth sent a wrist shot from the right point through traffic that snuck just inside the left post. Fleischman and Kubacki assisted on the play. Baxter recorded 8 saves in the period, while Antigo netminder Ryan Schmidt stopped all 5 shots he faced.

There were no penalties in the first period, but that changed in the second. Antigo was flagged three times in the period and Lakeland once. Both teams' penalty killers came through though, and there was no scoring. Much of that credit goes to Jacob Baxter who stopped 15 shots, a couple while sprawled out on his back during a flurry midway through the stanza.

The Robins were penalized four more times in the third period, and this time it caught up with them, as Lakeland scored a power play goal at the 5:10 mark, during part one of a double minor on Fleischman. Nik Boyer was working the puck in the right corner and made his way out to the faceoff dot. He fired a high, hard shot that Schimdt managed to knock down, but Jason Anderson was right there to put in the rebound. Bryan Way was also credited with an assist on the play.

Baxter ended the night with 33 saves, while Schmidt stopped 16.

Antigo will host Waupaca, while the Thunderbirds travel to Rhinelander on Thursday night in pair of GNC games.
