After a slow start to the season, there does not seem to be anything wrong with the Waukesha Wings Coop High School Hockey team as they won their 3rd game in a row with an upset of (7) Marquette on Friday Night. On a strong performance from Junior Zed Dietrich, the Wings defeated the Marquette Hilltoppers 9-4 at Eble Ice Arena. Dietrich, lead the scoring with three goals and two assists with help from Seniors Joe Horan and Trent Borgardt each having a goal and two assists.
The Wings struck first in the middle of the first with a goal by Junior Alex Runge at 8:03. Marquette answered quickly on a shorthanded goal from Sophomore Michael Gilbert at 7:31. The Wings rebounded and Junior Zed Dietrich scored a Power Play goal at 7:45. The first ended with a series of Wings penalties that left the Wings on a 5-3 starting the second.
It did not take long for Marquette to capitalize with a score at 16:46 in the 2nd on a Power Play goal from Senior JJ Kispert. The Wings continued to struggle staying out of the box again found themselves in a 5-3 just minutes later. Marquette again found success with a Power Play goal by Gilbert at 13:17.
Down for the first time in the game, the Wings got it together and started a push that Marquette could not contain scoring 6 unanswered goals to go up 8-3. Senior Dominic Florian was the first to score followed by a pair from Dietrich to finish out the second. Seniors Cody Vanthournout, Borgardt and Horan all added to the tally with goals in the third. Following a Hat Trick goal by Gilbert, Vanthournout found the back of the net at :37 left in the game to put the icing on a 9-4 Wings Victory.
Wings’ goaltender, Jake Kupsky, had 26 saves on 30 shots while Marquette’s goaltender, Conor Caragher, had 19 saves on 28 shots.
The Wings are now 3-1-1 with a game against Oskosh on Saturday at Eble Ice Arena.
