RWD: Six Games in Nine Days

Cheavers Get Off to 5-1 Start



When the 2012-13 hockey season started for RWD it started with little time for the players to catch their breath.  The "Cheavers", as RWD is known to their fans, started their season playing in the Beloit Thanksgiving Tournament.

RWD opened the Beloit Tournament taking on Stoughton.  The Vikings jumped off to an early lead as a shot by Aaron Shanklin found its way into the goal at the 3:20 mark of the first period.  Stoughton led 1-0.  Five minutes later Aussie Miller increased the lead to two, when he came down the left side of the rink and placed the puck in the back of the net.  Max Quale gave the Vikings a 3-0 lead with Nick Dvorak and Brett Byrne being credited with assists on the goal with 4:41 remaining in the period.  RWD’s Sean Teske put the Cheavers on the board with 2:33 on the clock with assists being credited to Jesse Greenwood and Matt Olson.  The period ended with Stoughton up 3-1.

After a scoreless second period, RWD was able to cut the deficit in half as Jordan Bill and Jordan Brown assisted on Cortland Maxfield’s goal early in the third period.  Matt Olson collected his second assist of the game, when Ashton Mace tied the game at 3 with 10:49 remaining in the third period.  RWD completed the come from behind victory by scoring their fourth unanswered goal less than 90 seconds later.  Jordan Bill passed the puck to Cortland Maxfield.  Maxfield moved the puck to the point, Darius Scholz.  Scholz took the shot from just inside the blue line to the right Stoughton’s Taylor Lyons as he viewed the shot coming towards him.  Somehow the puck found an opening between the pipe and Lyons giving RWD a 4-3 lead, which the Cheavers made hold up for the rest of the game.  Lyons finished the game with 27 saves for Stoughton.  Tyler Arneson had 22 saves for RWD.

The Cheavers second game in the tournament was scheduled for 10:30 Saturday morning against host Beloit Memorial.  RWD took a 1-0 lead at the 13:27 mark on a goal by Sean Teske with Jesse Greenwood and Austin Schyvinck assisting on the goal.  RWD lead 1-0 at the end of the first period.

Beloit’s Patrick Whalen took advantage of a power play opportunity and scored the only goal in the second period with 10:04 showing on the clock.  Jarrett Malazio and David Wandell assisted on the play.  End of two periods and the game is deadlocked at 1.

Fifty-three seconds into the third period, RWD’s Jordan Bill scored with an assist from Cortland Maxfield giving the Cheavers a 2-1 lead.  Whalen collected his second goal of the game with an assist from Tanner Poglaze at the 3:54 mark of the third tying the game at 2.  Poglaze and Whalen switched roles on the next Beloit goal with 7:23 remaining in the period giving Beloit their first lead at 3-2.  Poglaze and Malazio assisted on Whalen’s third goal of the game at 12:17 of the third period increasing the Purple Knight lead to two at 4-2.  The Cheavers continued to battle and cut the lead to one as Jordan Bill scored on a power play with Cortland Maxfield assisting on the play.  The Purple Knights held on for a 4-3 win.  Beloit’s Ashton Walker finished the game with 39 saves, while Tyler Arneson had 25 saves for RWD.

RWD’s final game was against the Janesville Bluebirds.  The Bluebirds and RWD played for 33 minutes 22 seconds before RWD took the lead with 38 seconds remaining in second period.  Jesse Greenwood gave an all out effort and put the puck in the back of the net as he fell to the ice giving RWD a 1-0 lead at the end of two periods.

Clay Simonson tied the game at one with an assist from Mike Money at 1:03 of the third.  Cortland Maxfield and Jordan Bill assisted on a Matt Olson goal at the 6:55 mark of the third giving RWD a 2-1 lead.  Mike Money assisted on a shorthanded goal by Dane Tyler at 12:23 of the period.  The Bluebirds took the lead at 15:21 of the third period, when Sam Iverson scored a power play goal with Braden Perkins assisting on the play.  RWD continued to compete and with 29 seconds remaining in regulation Matt Olson tied the game with an assist from Jordan Bill.

RWD picked up the win in overtime, when Cortland Maxfield scored at 5:05 of overtime with an assist from Jordan Bill.  Janesville’s Michael Macdougall had 31 saves.  Freshman Michael Olson had 25 saves for RWD.

Madison Memorial at RWD

After having two days without any games, RWD hosted Madison Memorial on Tuesday, November 27th.  Matt Olson gave RWD the early lead with an assist from Cortland Maxfield at the 6:39 mark of the first period.  The Spartans responded with a goal by Will Blanchard at 9:29 with Cory Dennis assisting on the play.  Riley Karns gave Madison Memorial the lead with 6:12 left in the first period.  Zach Osborn had 7 saves in the period for the Spartans, while senior Hunter Christensen had 9 saves for RWD.

RWD switched goalies to start the second period.  The Spartans increased their lead to two, when a power play goal was scored one minute into the second period by Jacob Padley with Jack Andringa and Cory Dennis assisting on the play.  Madison Memorial scored a second power play goal at the 2:48 mark of the second period giving the Spartans a 4-1 lead.  The goal was scored by Jamy Dennis.  Macrae Robertson and Ty Pelton-Byce were credited with assists on the play.  RWD scored a goal at 4:37 of the second, when Jordan Brown and Zach Clisch assisted on a goal by Jordan Bill.  Austin Wieser pulled the Cheavers within one with an assist from Andrew Schulenburg with 4:12 left in the second period.  RWD completed the scoring in the second period at the 13:46 mark as Jordan Bill collected his second goal of the game with an assist from Cortland Maxfield and Matt Olson.  Arneson made 3 saves in the period for RWD, while Osborn had 8 saves.  The second period ended in a 4-4 tie.

Early in the third period Jordan Bill scored a power play goal to give RWD the lead with Austin Schyvinck and Maxfield assisting on the goal.  RWD’s Colin Scanlon lofted a pass from deep in the Cheavers defensive zone to Maxfield in neutral ice.  Maxfield collected the puck and found the back of the net to increase RWD’s lead to two with 2:14 on the clock.  Jesse Greenwood collected an assist, when Sean Teske completed the scoring with an empty net goal with 41 seconds left in the game.  RWD won 7-4.  Osborne finished the game with 23 saves, while Arneson (10) and Christensen (9) combined for 19 saves for the Cheavers.

RWD at Sparta

Thursday, November 29th, RWD traveled to Sparta hoping to exact some revenge for a loss in the playoffs last year.  Sparta was able to grab the early lead at 6:32 of the first period.  Hunter Marty and Zach Holcomb had a 2 on 1 breakaway for the Spartans.  RWD’s Zach Clisch made a very nice defensive play, when Marty tried to center the puck to Holcomb.  Unfortunately, the puck went right back to Marty and this time the pass was successful.  Holcomb was able to secure the puck and lift it past RWD’s Tyler Arneson for a 1-0 lead.  While the Cheavers were able to keep the puck in the offensive zone for the majority of the period, it wasn’t until there were 45 seconds left on the clock RWD was able to tie the game on a goal by Cortland Maxfield with Matt Olson and Jordan Bill assisting on the play.  Sean Teske gave the Cheavers a 2-1 lead with 1 second left in the first.  Jesse Greenwood and Ashton Mace were credited with assists on the play.   Tyler Arneson finished the period with 7 saves, while Luke Frelke had 17 saves for Sparta.

Fifty-two seconds into the second period, Jesse Greenwood and Colin Scanlon assisted on Ashton Mace’s goal.  Maxfield collected his second goal of the game with an assist from Austin Schyvinck at 5:53 of the second period.  Defenseman Colin Scanlon collected his first goal of the season, when he crashed the net an put a loose puck past Frelke giving RWD a 5-1 lead with 6:01 on the clock.  Jesse Greenwood collected a pass from Mace and scored a shorthanded goal at 11:54 of the period.  RWD scored two more times in the second period as they took advantage of a 5 minute major Sparta received for a kneeing penalty.  Matt Olson scored both of the goals with Maxfield and Teske being credited with an assist on the second goal.  RWD led 8-1 at the end of two periods.  Frelke had 26 saves in the second period, while Arneson had 3 saves.

Michael Olson relieved Arneson in net to start the third period.  Logan Marsich scored the lone goal in the period for the Cheavers with Maxfield collecting an assist.  Olson had two saves giving RWD 12 saves for the game.  Frelke had 15 saves giving him 58 saves for the game.

Wausau East at RWD

RWD played their sixth game in nine days on Saturday, December 1st.  Wausau East made the trip to Reedsburg.  RWD jumped to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period.  Cortland Maxfield had 3 goals including a power play goal in the period.  Jesse Greenwood had the other goal.  Seven different players accounted for the assists in the first period.  Jordan Brown and Zach Clisch had assists on the first goal.  The second goal saw Jordan Bill and Sean Teske being credited with assists.  Andrew Schulenburg and Ashton Mace assisted on Greenwood’s goal.  Austin Schyvinck assisted on the final goal in the period.  Tyler Arneson had 10 saves for RWD, while Jacob Matsche had 10 saves for the Lumberjacks.

Ashton Mace scored a power play goal in the second period with 11:41 on the clock.  RWD’s Greenwood had a short handed goal at 11:09 of the second with Maxfield and Schyvinck assisting on the play.  Ben Feck put the Lumberjacks on the board with Andy Cravens and Sam Romanski assisting on the goal with thirty-nine seconds left in the second period.  Matsche collected 21 saves in the second period, while Arneson had 2 saves for RWD.

The Lumberjacks scored at 6:55 of the third period, when Romanski and Landon Dehnel assisted on Gunnar Bode’s short handed goal to bring Wausau East within four at 6-4.  Matt Olson had RWD’s third power play goal of the game at 8:15 of the third with Maxfield assisting on the play.  Sean Teske scored the final goal of the game with an assist from Jordan Brown with 5:04 on the clock.  Matsche had 9 saves and finished with 40 saves in the game.  Arneson collected 8 saves and had 20 total.

RWD’s next game is Tuesday, December 11th.  They will open conference play against Baraboo/Portage.  Wausau East’s next game is Tuesday, December 4th against Stevens Point.
