Defending state champs solid in win

After a 1-0 win over University School of Milwaukee on Saturday and one period on Tuesday in which they scored a single goal, the defending state champion Central Wisconsin Storm had to wonder what was going on. In a span of 68 minutes, the Storm scored twice on 42 shots, a far cry from last year's pace of one goal per eight shots on net.

The Storm came to life in the final two periods against visiting Point-Rapids, scoring three goals in each stanza to coast to a 7-0 victory at Greenheck Fieldhouse.

Freshman Arielle Riedel scored her first varsity goal on a shot from the low right circle that slipped under the pads of P-R goalie Emily Bubla to give the home squad a one-goal lead just 68 seconds into the contest.

The first period ended with that 1-0 score as the Storm outshot the Red Panthers by a 5-1 margin.

The Storm scored three times in the second in less than eight minutes to build a comfortable 4-0 lead. Kelly Knetter scored her second goal of the season while on the power play, skating from the right circle to the high slot and scoring on Bubla's glove side. Megan Marlowe earned a helper at the 1:50 mark.

Just under three minutes later, freshman Teagan Tretter scored her first varsity goal as her shot from the right circle found the back of the net. Isabelle Chmiel earned an assist on the play.

Kylie Gazzolo scored midway through the period on a shot from the left side at the 9:25 mark to end the scoring in the period. The shots were 9-1 in favor of the Storm.

The score stayed 4-0 until just after midway through the third, but then the hosts tallied a three-pack in a span of three minutes to effectively end the affair.

Ashley Zacho worked a 2-on-1 to perfection and scored with help from Tretter at 9:09. Shortly after, the Storm failed to take advantage of a power play but scored just five seconds after the infraction expired with Marlowe's shot just sliding past the outstretched right toe of the Red Panthers goalie.

The final score was put on the board by Kenzie Schmidt when she tapped back a rebound from the low right side at 12:04. The Storm took 13 shots, while the guests managed only a single shot on net in the period.

Storm goalie Lisa Fowle hardly broke a sweat, stopping three shots. Bubla was a tad busier on the opposite end and ended with 20 saves.

The Storm (2-0) are hosting the Gobbler Cup tournament this weekend in Mosinee and once again face off against University School. Point-Rapids drops to 0-1 and will host newcomer Waupaca Monday night at the South Wood County Rec Center in Wisconsin Rapids.
