Three players with origins in the Badger State heard their names called in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft held June 22-23 at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.

Jordan Schmaltz was chosen by St. Louis with the 25th pick in the first round. Schmaltz, a 6-2, 180# defenseman, is originally from Verona but spent the last three years in the USHL. While playing for Sioux City and Green Bay, he compiled 85 points (23g-62a) in 110 games.

One round later, defenseman Jake McCabe was picked by Buffalo with the 44th overall pick. McCabe, an Eau Claire native, spent two years with the US National Development team before playing at UW-Madison last season. The 6-0, 200# blueliner tallied 12 points (3g-9a) in 26 games for the Badgers.

In the sixth round (168th overall selection), Appleton's Cliff Watson was nabbed by San Jose. Watson, a 6-2, 190# defenseman, spent last year playing for Sioux City in the USHL, notching eight assists in 58 games. Prior to that, Watson played for three years with Appleton United.

"I'm just really excited and happy that I am going to a great organization like the San Jose Sharks," said Watson. "And the work doesn't stop there; I need to get stronger and improve so I can play at the next level. I hope to be a big impact to that team in the future."
