Statement made on Friday against defending NIT champs

TW 4, MN Seniors 2

Just over one year ago, Team Wisconsin trudged off Rink C at the Plymouth Ice Center, after losing 4-1 to Minnesota in the 2011 Minnesota NIT.

This year, TW returned the favor Friday evening as they took it to the Minnesota Seniors 4-2.

'T-Dub' got on the board first, just over three minutes in.

Emily Lester took a give-and-go pass from Anna Westmark and buried it for a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin had a couple shots on a power play midway through the period, but was unable to score and then skated off at the first intermission with the 1-0 lead and an 11-10 shot edge.

Minnesota tied the game at the 4:35 mark of the second on a score by Kayla Fuechtmann.

Exactly three minutes later, Sam O'Brien buried her own rebound to make it 2-1. Taylor Rudiger and Kassie Lien earned assists on the play.

TW goalie Kim Van Brunt made an impressive goal save with just over five minutes left in the period to preserve the one-goal margin.

The 2-1 lead held up, with Minnesota holding a 10-7 shot advantage in the period.

Lien made it 3-1 at 5:27 of the third when she scored from the slot on assists from O'Brien and Hannah Bird.

Five minutes later, Minnesota's Jonna Curtis cut the lead to 3-2.

TW had another PP opportunity just over a minute later, but was unable to score.

Shawna Bollinger buried the dagger thanks to her empty-netter with ten seconds left, with help from Katherine Nejedlo.

Shots favored Minnesota, 12-9 in the stanza.

Van Brunt played an outstanding game, stopping 30 of 32 shots. On the other end, Brittany Fussy (14) and Madison Denny (9) combined for 23 saves.

TW 6, North Dakota 2

TW scored twice in the first period and then after North Dakota tied the game, scored four times in the final period to run away with a 6-2 win Saturday morning at the Plymouth Ice Center.

Anna Westmark scored at 12:24 with an assist from Lauren Roethlisberger.

Just over two minutes later, Kylie Gazzolo scored on a scramble in front of the net. Shots were 12-7 in favor of TW.

TW began the second period on the penalty kill, but kept North Dakota out of the net. They would not be so lucky just three minutes in as Lindsay Nagel scored the first of her two power play goals to cut the lead to 2-1.

Nagel's second man-advantage tally came with just 18 seconds left in the period.

TW outshot North Dakota 11-4 in the period.

Roethlisberger scored on the power play at the 4:00 mark of the third when her shot trickled off ND goalie Andrea Klug's back and into the net to give TW a 3-2 lead.

Katherine Nejedlo scored on an end-to-end rush at 9:25, and then Sam O'Brien scored on a rebound just 11 seconds later to make it 5-2.

Nikki Kloes finished the scoring with an empty-netter with 1:33 left. TW held a 12-6 shot advantage in the period.

Kim Van Brunt (8) and Julia Brueggen (7) finished with 15 saves for TW, while Klug stopped 29 of 34 in the contest.
