Gazzolo, Hayes, Roethlisberger, and Rudiger each score twice in win

The scoreboard said the final was 9-0, but the WiPH scorekeeper's notes showed a 10-0 win for Team Wisconsin over Northern Plains Friday morning/afternoon in the Minnesota NIT at the Plymouth Ice Center.

The game was delayed for nearly an hour due to a lack of officials at the rink. The contest finally began just after 11:30am.

From the puck drop, it was all TW. After eight minutes of play, TW led in shots by a margin of 12-0, and the only thing that kept them off the board was the stellar work of Plains goalie Tessa Singleton, who repelled all shots fired at her for the first 15 minutes of play.

Hannah Bird finally broke the ice with her wrister from the slot at the 15:25 mark, with an assist to Emily Lester.

It looked like that's how the period would end, but Kylie Gazzolo had a tap-in goal with just 13 seconds left in the stanza.

Shots were 23-1 in favor of TW, which was a completely different scenario for TW goalie Julia Brueggen. The fewest shots she faced during the regular season for her Viroqua team was 43, so the hardest thing she did in her 27 minutes of play today was to stay awake.

TW scored four times in the second, beginning with Lauren Roethlisberger's goal just 40 seconds into the period.

Kim Van Brunt came in to replace Brueggen with just over eight minutes left in the period, but she was no busier than her teammate.

TW's second and third goals came in a span of 14 seconds, courtesy of Taylor Rudiger and Myranda Hayes, to to make it 5-0 with just over five minutes left in the period.

Katherine Nejedlo scored at the 15:19 mark to increase the lead to 6-0. Shots in the period were 16-2 in favor of TW.

Hayes and Roethlisberger scored their second goals exactly one minute apart early in the third to make it 8-0. Rudiger scored her second with just over five minutes left, and Gazzolo tallied again with 31 ticks left to account for the final score.

TW once again held the shot edge, 13-3 in the period.

Brueggen (2) and Van Brunt (3) combined for five saves, while Singleton stopped 42 of 52 at the other end for Northern Plains.

Things will get a little tougher for TW tonight, as they take on defending NIT champions Minnesota. Game time is set for 7:45pm. We will have updates on Wisconsin Prep Hockey.
