Schmitz's five-point performance paves way for win

Peter Schmitz scored twice and added three assists to lead Section Eight past Section Four 8-5 Friday evening in the Senior Class Tournament held at the Waupun Community Center.

Eight jumped out to a 3-0 lead just seven minutes into the first period on goals by Jake Roeper (short-handed), Jeremy McCarty, and Schmitz.

A late flurry in the last minute of play added three goals to the totals on the scoreboard.

Keaton Bronston scored the first of his three goals with 28 seconds left to cut the lead to 3-1.

Eight seconds later Bryce Smit added an unassisted goal to give S8 a 4-1 lead.

Bronston scored again with just four ticks left on the clock to make it 4-2 as the teams skated off for the first intermission.

Schmitz scored just 21 seconds into the second period to increase Eight's lead to 5-2, but once again S4 would battle back.

Tyler Gorniak made a nice move across the middle and patiently waited for an opening and fired the puck past goalie Jack McMahon to pare the lead to two goals just over four minutes into the period.

Midway through the period, Jared Johnson scored for S8 to make it 6-3.

Once again, late period theatrics helped pad the numbers on the scoreboard.

Spencer Schmitt and Johnson tallied in a span of 16 seconds to build the lead to 8-3 with just over a minute left, but Bronston completed his hattie with just 17 seconds left to make it 8-4.

Luke Bjorklund scored just under six minutes into the final period to account for the 8-5 final.

McMahon (12) and Alex Tillotson (19) combined for 31 saves in the win, while Stephen Schultz (10) and Scott Sibik (15) tallied 25 saves for Section 4.
