Wausau West got two goals and an assist each from Tom Kilgore and Seth Wage, along with four points (1g-3a) from Kyle Lee as the Warriors played a consistent game in defeating Brookfield 6-3 in the first boys' semifinal game at the WIAA State tournament Friday at the Alliant Energy Center.

The start was delayed 31 minutes due to the four-overtime game between Kettle Moraine and Onalaska in girls' semifinal play earlier.

The Stars got on the board first, courtesy of a West penalty.

The Brookfield defensemen--brothers Matt and Robby Fosdick--moved the puck around on top and found Brandt Rogers open in the left circle. One hard wrister later and Brookfield led 1-0, at the 7:23 mark.

With about five minutes left in the period, the Stars' P.J. Corbett grabbed a loose puck and set sail on a short-handed breakaway, only to be stoned by West goalie Sam Wiegert.

Late in the period, Brookfield returned the favor with two penalties and the Warriors worked the power play to perfection, scoring twice in a span of 91 seconds.

Kilgore put back a rebound--with assists to John Feemster and Tanner Gould--at 15:05, and then Wage scored, also on the PP, on a shot from the dot that Brookfield goalie J.J. Murnane just missed with his glove. The goal at 16:36 gave West a 2-1 lead going into the first break.

Shots were even at 11 apiece.

Early in the second, Wage made it 3-1, courtesy of a nice pass from Zach Peterson. While working at the top of the left circle, Peterson found Wage sneaking down low and fed him the puck. Wage's shot from the right hashmarks beat Murnane up high. The goal came at 4:08.

The Stars would not be denied and cut the lead to 3-2 just over nine minutes in.

Patrick O'Brien's shot from the top of the right circle just eluded Wiegert's glove for the goal. Robby Fosdick assisted on the play.

A minute later, West scored again on the power play. Just ten seconds in, Lee fired a shot from the point, with an assist to Wage. (Unofficially, Kilgore should have received the goal on a re-direct.) Either way, West ended the period with a 4-2 lead.

Shots were once again even,  this time at nine.

Early in the third period, Lee was tripped up on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Murnane was able to thwart the effort to keep the score at 4-2, but that would soon change.

A couple minutes later, a shot by Lee was grabbed by Kevin Conley, and the freshman put back the rebound at 5:41 to make it 5-2. Thomas Brown also earned a helper on the scoring play.

Less than two minutes later, West scored its fourth power play goal.

The speedy, shifty Lee carried the puck in and left a drop pass for Kilgore, who roofed it from the right circle to increase West's lead to 6-2 at the 7:28 mark.

The Stars would score with 1:06 left to account for the final score. Matt Fosdick's wrister from the right dot snuck past Wiegert, with an assist to O'Brien.

Shots were even at eight apiece in the stanza.

Wiegert stopped 25 shots in the win, leading West to the finals against Notre Dame on Saturday. Murnane stopped 22 shots for Brookfield, who ended the season with a mark of 20-9, including wins in 15 of their last 17 games.
