Bales outstanding in net for Glacier in loss with 47 saves

It took over 80 minutes, but Theresa Knutson finally ended the suspense with her snap shot from the left side past KM Glacier goalie Jenna Bales at the 5:43 mark to give top-ranked Onalaska a 5-4 win in semi-final action Friday afternoon at the Alliant Energy Center.

The first period was scoreless with Ona holding a 6-4 shot edge.

KM scored first at the 3:27 mark when Jessica Foley knocked in a power play goal, with an assist to Irene Hougard.

It took Onalaska 25 seconds to tie the contest when Knutson tallied with a helper from Molly Coughlin.

Knutson scored again at the 7:06 mark when she got behind the defense with a nice toe-drag and beat Bales to increase the lead to 2-1. Baylee Darling and Ellie Meyer earned assists on the play.

The 'Toppers added to their lead about three minutes later with a Kianna Kalmes score. The puck was shot on net and it hit off a skate in front and bounced in to make it 3-1. Knutson got an assist on the play.

The period ended with Onalaska holding an 11-6 shot advantage.

Just over three minutes into the third, freshman Jacyn Reeves used great individual effort while on the PK to score a shorty for Ona. She grabbed the puck behind the net after Bales and a defenseman had a miscommunication with a dumped-in puck. Reeves skated out in front of the net and ripped a shot that caught the upper left corner of the net to make it 4-1.

The Glacier would then reel off three goals in six and one-half minutes to tie the contest.

Jeralyse Tylke scored at 4:46 with an assist to Jamie Ertl to make it 4-2.

Just over a minute later, Morgan Hollowell scored from the top of the circle to cut it to 4-3.

Then she tied the game at the 11:15 mark when her shot from the left circle beat Ona goalie Jeanalyn Schindler on the stick side.

Onalaska held a 13-10 shot edge in a wild third period.

In the three scoreless extra periods, Onalaska outshot KM, 19-11.

The fourth overtime saw Knutson finally end the game with her shot from the left side.

Schindler stopped 28 shots despite getting shaken up when a KM Glacier player ran over her on a breakaway. Bales ended the game with 47 saves in a valiant effort.

Onalaska (26-2) moves on to Saturday's championship game against the Central Wisconsin Storm at noon. Kettle Moraine ends their season at 20-7.
