Defending state champs move on to semifinal round

Kyle Lee scored twice and Sam Wiegert stopped 27 pucks to lead Wausau West to a 4-1 victory over Marquette in a quarterfinal contest at the Alliant Energy Center on Thursday.

The Warriors--bent on defending their state title--put the first tally on the board when Kevin Conley's shot skimmed off the crossbar and ended up behind Hilltoppers' goalie Mike Roznik just 2:46 into the game. Tanner Gould and Kyle Lee earned assists on the play.

That line would also be responsible for the game's second goal.

West worked the puck in low and Lee--a Player of the Year finalist--put it home from just outside the crease to make it 2-0 at 4:37. Gould and Conley were credited with helpers.

Marquette outshot the Warriors in the period, 11-8.

It took over ten minutes for someone to score in the second, but West did it twice in a span of 17 seconds to grab a commanding 4-0 lead.

Lee notched his second goal at the 10:34 mark from down low with an assist to Metzinger to increase the lead to 3-0.

Seventeen seconds later, Seth Wage snuck down low and scored with help from Andrew Lee and Drew Pearson to make it 4-0.

Marquette then called time-out.

Neither team was able to score in the last six minutes, and the period ended with Marquette outshooting West 9-6.

The Hilltoppers finally got on the board late in the period, courtesy of special teams.

While on the PK, Llaurado parked at the opposing blueline and grabbed a long pass and tallied a shorty at 12:17 to make it 4-1. Interestingly enough, no assist was awarded on the play.

The Hilltoppers outshot the Warriors once again, 8-7.

Wiegert's 27 saves were enough to earn the win, while Roznik stopped 17 on his end.

West improves to 19-7-2, while Marquette ends at 22-6.
