February 1 Top 8 boys’ teams in each WIAA Division
D-1
D-1: Fox Cities dropped out. De Pere entered. Hudson slides after a lopsided loss. Notre Dame and Brookfield are the next two in.
D-2
D-2: Baldwin-Woodville dropped out. Menomonie entered. Somerset moved up. Pines moved down. McFarland and Waunakee flip a coin who should be #1.
Eight teams ranked because it’s the number of teams the state tournament should have.
The tournament format should be changed. It’s idiotic to have semifinals for D-1 and D-2 on separate days. In the prior format with one division, quarterfinal Thursday was the best day of high school hockey in Wisconsin. Even with two divisions and four teams per division, we could drastically improve the tournament by having all boys’ semifinals on the same day, and D-2 and D-1 championships back-to-back.
These rankings represent the teams and seeds if the selections were made by me today!

January 24 Top 8 boys’ teams in each WIAA Division
D-1
D-1: Sun Prairie enters the rankings with Brookfield’s exit. Since mid-December Sun Prairie’s only loss is by one goal in the final seconds to Waunakee.
D-2
D-2: Waunakee takes over the top spot after Pines lost to Mosinee. McFarland’s only losses are to Waunakee and Edgewood and they jump Pines also.
Eight teams ranked because it’s the number of teams the state tournament should have. Having only four sections per division creates sections with massive geographic areas that lump multiple highly ranked teams together. D-1 Section One stretches from Superior to Stevens Point. Ridiculous! In D-1 the top three teams are in the same section. All three are legitimate state championship contenders.
These rankings represent the teams and seeds if the selections were made by me today. What a tournament we could have! D-2 starts quarterfinal games on Wednesday and D-1 on Thursday.
