After a shaky start, the Antigo Red Robins came back and beat the Shawano/Bonduel Hawks 3-1 to claim the championship of the 2025 Antigo Holiday Tournament.
The speed of the Hawks forwards had the Robins on their heels (Do Robins have heels?) in the first period, as Shawano was able to consistently get behind the Antigo defensemen. But Antigo goalie Austin Martinson picked up his defenders and kept the puck out.
Midway through the first period, Antigo was assessed with a major penalty for checking from behind, setting the Hawks up with a five minute power play. With the man advantage, Shawano planted 6’3” Kielian Armbruster in front of the net to screen the goalie. At 8:38 Cameron Schroeder fired a shot from the point that was artfully tipped by Armbruster over Martinson for an early 1-0 lead.
Late in the first period, Antigo had a golden opportunity to even the game when a pass came across the slot to Justus Keesling who was parked at the back door. His one-timer missed the net and the first period ended with Shawano/Bonduel up by one.
The Hawks out-shot the Robins 20-4 in the first period, with Shawano goalie Tyson Lyons stopping all the shots sent his way.
Ethan Novy tied the score at 3:08 in the second when he grabbed a loose puck in the high slot, spun to his right, and roofed a shot over Lyons. With four minutes left in the period, Alex Brittenham gave the Robins the lead when he fired a low shot from the outside hashmarks on the left boards toward the net. Lyons dropped down and extended his stick to stop the puck, But instead, the puck rolled up his stick and over his right shoulder into the top of the netting.
Antigo closed the shots on goal gap somewhat in the second, to just a 10 to 6 disadvantage.
The Hawks had several good scoring chances in the third, as the utilized their speed to get behind the Robin defenders, but they either missed the net with their shots, or were denied by Martinson. The final goal was scored against an empty net when Parker Chaney picked off a pass in the neutral zone and circled around the defense to score.
The final saves count was 42 for Martinson and 10 for Lyons.
