2025 D-1 Player of the State Tournament returns for senior season
As an 11th grader last season Owen Porter was a key contributor for Madison Edgewood's 2025 WIAA D-1 State Championship team. Porter had 53 points during the regular season, and then in playoffs he led Edgewood in points and was named Wisconsin Prep Hockey’s D-1 Player of the State Tournament.
Owen Porter returns to Madison Edgewood for his senior season as a team captain and an opportunity to win back-to-back WIAA state championships.
“Owen has been a four-year varsity player and helped the team to three conference championships, two straight State appearances and a state championship last season. OP is a talented forward with an elite compete level and he separates himself from other top players with his hockey IQ. He led the way offensively with 112 points in three seasons and is also counted on to shut down other teams’ top lines. Owen is also an excellent student and leader; he will add captain to his responsibilities this year. He had an excellent fall in the Elite League with Team Wisconsin and is without question on the short list of top players in the state.” Pete Rothering, head coach, Madison Edgewood
Let’s hear from Owen Porter!
Congratulations on winning the 2025 WIAA State Championship. Thank you!
What memory stands out most about winning State? Being together for Dylan Lenz and his family after a difficult time because Dylan’s brother Drew passed away.
Is your role at Edgewood different this season? Yes, for sure. Last season we had my line and Richter’s line, and the lines were equal. It won’t be the same without them. Our Owen line will need to step it up and drive the team’s success.
When did you start playing hockey? When I was age 5 in Indianapolis. My dad went to Medical School in Indiana. Then we moved back to Wisconsin.
Where did you play youth hockey? I played for Waunakee mites through bantams.
Did anyone in your family play hockey? Yes, my dad (Dr. Ryan Porter). Dad has had a massive influence on my game. He played at Edgewood and graduated in 1999.
Do you have any siblings? I have three younger sisters. Eleanor plays Caps 16, and Hattie plays Squirt A Waunakee. I help Dad coach the squirt team.
How do you like coaching? It is a fun experience! I am really close to my sister, so this is an opportunity to connect with her before I leave for college.
How was playing for TW 18 in the Elite League? It was a very fun experience. It’s cool to play some of the top Minnesota kids.
What’s your pregame ritual? I go to Noodles with the two Owen’s (linemates Owen Barnet and Owen Koch), then we stretch and warm up.
Hockey skills that separate you from the competition? For sure my IQ and knowing where my teammates are, and my ability to control the play defensively.
Who would you want to meet if it could be anyone? Connor McDavid or Josh Jacobs.
What would you want to know about McDavid? The way McDavid plays; I want to learn what it takes to play his game and be as dominant as he is.
Your plan for hockey after high school? I am not sure.
If you don’t go to juniors, where will you go to school? UW Madison.
What do you want to do for a career? A neurosurgeon.
How much school will that require? About 12 years.
What do you enjoy doing in addition to hockey? I love to be outdoors. I love to fish. I play lacrosse in spring for Edgewood’s Coop team.
Favorite food? Sushi.
Favorite restaurant for Sushi? Muramoto in Madison.
Favorite music group or type of music? Country music.
Chocolate cake, brownie, or apple pie? Brownie
Pickup truck or sports car? Sports car. Ferrari.
Final thoughts? I want to thank my Dad for everything he has done for me. I appreciate everything Matt Walsh did for me and thank Chase Drake, also. Pete Rothering my coach at Edgewood keeps the program going and I truly appreciate everything he does. Finally, I want to thank all my teammates at Edgewood and Team Wisconsin.
Best wishes to Owen Porter and Madison Edgewood!
Yours for hockey, Matt Carey
