Edge goalie Sophie Schmidt stops 66 shots in contest

They say that bad things happen in threes, and it sure did for the Northern Edge hockey team Friday evening.

First of all, locker room #1 at the South Wood County Rec Center wasn't ready for them upon the team's arrival. Secondly, two players forgot to pack both home and away jerseys, and as it happened, the Edge needed to wear their home whites.

And third and finally, they got outshot 71-7 in suffering a 5-0 loss at the hands of the Point-Rapids Red Panthers in the regional final playoff game.

The Red Panthers (12-12) struck first on a goal by Molly Kuckkahn. The junior's shot from the slot area hit Edge goalie Sophie Schmidt on the right shoulder and bounced over and into the net for a 1-0 home team lead at 9:47 of the first. Makayla Lee and Kiana Coombs were given assists on the play.

The Red Panthers made it 2-0 just over four minutes later when Brianne Huettner fought down the left boards, cut inside to the low left circle and snuck a shot between the post and Schmidt's right Bauer pad at the 13:51 mark, with assists to Nicole Hassig and Rachel Nolan.

The period ended with Point-Rapids holding a huge 23-5 shot advantage over the Edge.

Rachel Metz bumped the lead to 3-0 midway through the middle stanza. The sophomore flipped in a rebound from the low left side over a sprawling Schmidt, with Huettner and Hassig credited with helpers on the play.

The Red Panthers were even more dominant in controlling the game, outshooting their foes by a margin of 26-1 in the second.

Metz increased the lead to 4-0 with her second goal in the middle of the third. She took a pass from the right corner, skated across the high slot and snuck a shot past the goalie's blocker at the 8:28 mark. Huettner and Hassig (playmaker) earned assists on the play.

The final score came with just 1:49 left when Hassig punched in a rebound from the low left, with assists to Brooke Maslinski and Metz.

The Edge were outgunned 22-1 in the period.

In the win, Red Panthers goalie Emily Bubla earned her sixth shutout of the year, stopping all seven shots fired at her.

Schmidt performed admirably in the loss, stopping 66 of 71 shots.

The Edge ends its season with a mark of 2-18-1.

The Red Panthers move to the Sectional 2 semi-finals, hosting Northland Pines at 4:30pm on Tuesday. Pines beat Tomahawk 6-4 to move on to this round.
