Junior netminder stops 28 shots in playoff victory

Junior Brady Huettner turned aside 28 shots and the Pacelli Cardinals got goals from four different players as they defeated visiting Antigo 4-1 Tuesday evening at Ice Hawks Arena in the opening round of WIAA tournament play.

The first period was scoreless, with the hosts holding a 15-11 shot edge.

The scoreboard finally got some work when Pacelli took advantage of a power play late in the second. Jon Lila ripped a shot from the top of the right circle that bounced off Antigo goalie Ryan Schmidt's glove and into the net to give the home squad a 1-0 lead at the 12:40 mark of the period, with an assist to Devin Kollock.

Just under two minutes later, Charlie Beyer popped in a loose puck from the slot to make it 2-0, with assists to Matthew Mitch and James Smyth.

Pacelli outshot Antigo 12-9 in the period.

The Red Robins took advantage of a power play early in the third to cut the lead in half.

Justin Wegter buried one from the back door on a nice pass from Zach Fleischman at the 3:16 mark, with Blake Kirsch earning another helper on the play.

Just over one minute later, the Cardinals regained their two-goal lead when Owen Yenter scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-1 at the 4:28 mark.

Luke Yenter tallied the final score of the game at the 7:56 mark, with an assist to Andrew Bauer.

The final half of the third period saw six penalties (four on Pacelli and two on Antigo), but neither team was able to cash in on the man-advantage as the game ended with a 4-1 win by the home team.

Antigo outshot the Cards 9-5, but were unable to prevail on the scoreboard.

Huettner stopped 28 of 29 in a stellar effort, while the freshman Schmidt played well at the other end, making 28 saves for the Red Robins.

Pacelli (12-9) will travel to Marathon Park Thursday to take on #1 seed Wausau West, while the Red Robins finish the season at  8-15.
