Power play goals prove the difference

The Central Wisconsin Storm honored their parents on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the visiting St. Croix Valley Fusion at Greenheck Fieldhouse.

The Fusion wasted little time scoring the first goal of the game just 28 seconds into the first period. Hailey Rock carried the puck into the Storm zone and behind the net. From there, she passed it out front to Tori Klingler who fired a slapshot from the top of the faceoff circle and beat Storm goalie Kristine Fonti.

If it seemed almost too easy, it was. The Storm held the Fusion scoreless with just 10 more shots on net for the rest of the game. Fusion coach Matt Cranston said “It’s been that way all year. We have trouble generating offense. We just don’t have many shooters.”

The Storm tied the game with a power play goal at 4:59 with a shot from the point that was stopped by Fusion goalie Carlie Christensen. But the puck bounced off her and lay just outside the top of the crease. As Christensen lunged to cover the loose Miranda Hayes crashed the net and got to the puck first and poked it into the net. Sarah Poirier and Paige Sedlar got the assists.

A minute later the Storm took the lead that started with another point shot. This one was stopped before it got to Christensen, but deflected to the left of the net where Cassidy Daley was lurking on the back door for an easy tap-in goal. Sarah Parsells and Jordyn Mroczenski got the assists.

That was the end of the scoring for about 40 minutes. Even with five consecutive short-handed situations, the Storm did not allow any good scoring chances. The next three penalties were on the Fusion, and the last one cost them.

Parsells was credited with the goal, since she took the shot, but it was actually a Fusion defender who tried to stop the shot, but only deflected it over the leg pad of Christensen. Marissa Matushak had the assist.

Fonti ended the game with 10 saves for the Storm, and Christensen stopped 18.
