The Bay Area Ice Bears have been stingy all season, allowing only 17 goals in 24 regular season games, one in two playoff games, and none in their semi-final game against the Cap City Cougars. They kept their net empty in the Championship game against the Central Wisconsin Storm, taking home the trophy with a decisive 8-0 victory at Bob Suter’s Legacy 20 Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Three minutes into the first period the Ice Bears were able to establish possession in the Storm zone. Bay area moved the puck around when Julianne Bradford passed from one side of the blue line to Mya Sheppard on the right point. Sheppard fired a wrist shot toward the net and Faye Brunke redirected it passed Storm goalie Cami Flohr to put the Ice Bears up at 3:48.

Bay area struck again eight minutes later when Tiana Sindt passed the puck to Brunke who was fighting for position in the high slot. Brunke caught the pass and spun to her right and fired a shot just inside the pipe and out of reach of Flohr.

Flohr stopped six shots in the first period, while at the other end of the ice, Bay Area goalie Reese Spiering had to make only three saves.

Three minutes into the second period Bradford shot a flutter puck toward the net. Flohr got her glove on it but was unable to catch it. The puck fell to her feet and Bill kept poking at it until it finally went into the net.

At 6:45 in the second period, Brunke passed the puck to Bradford in the slot. Bradford fired toward the net, but the shot was blocked by a Storm defender and the puck came right back to Bradford. Her second attempt found the back of the net.

The Storm had two good scoring chances in the second getting the puck and traffic to the front of the Bay Area net. But Spiering was strong on here skates and held her ground. Late inn the period Central Wisconsin went on the power play and got several shots on Spiering but again came out empty.

Ice Bears seemed content to defend their lead for the first seven minutes of the third period. Then they were called for a hooking penalty, sending the Storm on another power play. But a Storm defender mishandled the puck on the blue line and Brunke picked up the loose puck and raced down the ice alone on Flohr. Brunke faked left and went right, tucking a backhand behind Flohr to complete her hat trick.

Less than a minute later, Lily Lyons scored again for the Ice Bears to bring the score to 6-0 and put the game into running time with five and a half minutes to play.

Rachel Beeck and Brunke tacked on a couple extra goals to make the final score 8-0.

Flohr ended the afternoon with 23 saves. Spiering finished with 16.
