In 1991 the Tomahawk Hatchets went to the WIAA State High School Hockey Tournament. They lost 6-1 to Madison La Folllette in the opening around and didn't return to the tournament again until 2024.
Now in 2025 they are going again, on the back of a 5-1 victory over the Mosinee Indians at the Mosinee City Recreation Center on Friday night.
Sawyer Hanna opened the scoring with a power play goal for the Hatchets with assists to Jett Reilly and Brayden Lamer five minutes into the game.
Mosinee answered back quickly, however, when Elliot Yirkovsky potted a shot from high in the offensive zone just over the outstretched leg of the Tomahawk tender to make it 2-1, with an assist to Tyler Baars.
The teams played very evenly for the rest of the first period with both goalies making big saves along the way. Finally, Jonah Dickens, broke the tie with 1:45 left in the period. The puck skittered between Mosinee's two blueliners, and Dickens managed to jump on it for a break away. He managed to keep his feet when slashed from behind, and scored on the breakaway (to negate the slashing penalty) to make it 2-1.
Aiden Karst had 11 saves in the first period for Mosinee, and Trevor Seliskar had 8 for Tomahawk.
The second period was another story however. Tomahawk absolutely dominated the second period. The puck was buried in the Mosinee zone for the majority of the period. Despite the dominant play, it took Tomahawk 15:54 to crack Karst again.
When they finally did, Austin Lamer slid the puck across the slot to Brayden Lamer who put the one-timer in for another power play goal and 3-1 lead.
Tomahawk tallied another power play goal 40 seconds later. This time it was Jett Reilly, from A. Lamer and Hanna. Suddenly the 2-1 game was a 4-1 Tomahawk lead with time expiring in the second.
The Hatchets outshot Mosinee 22-3 in the second period. Karst turned away 20 of those 22 shots. Seliskar stopped all three for the Hatchets.
After two periods, the Hatchets were 3-for-4 on the power play, and it was the difference in the scoreboard. For their part Mosinee was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
The third period was a parade to the penalty box for both teams trading 11 penalties in total between them. At the mid-point of the period during a bit of 4-on-4 play, Austin hit Brayden again to make it 5-1 which is how it would end. Tomahawk outshot Mosinee 13-4 in the third period.
Karst, a senior, had a great game for Mosinee stopping 43 shots on 48 attempts, including seven power play opportunities for the Hatchets. Seliskar, also a senior, had a quieter night in net, stopping 15 of 16 shots.
Tomahawk has been ranked #1 in Division 2 in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey/Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association Top Six since the first vote of the season, and now they move to Madison where they get the chance to prove it.
