Three power play goals plus a shorty plus a stingy defense added up to West Bend 4-2 victory over Tomahawk at Sara Park on Saturday afternoon. Reid Newkirk’s hattrick and 35 saves by RJ Katsma helped the Bears make a sweep of their two game northern road-trip, after beating Lakeland 4-1 on Friday night.

Freshman goalie Hudson Seymour made his second consecutive start, filling in for an ailing Trevor Seliskar for the Hatchets, and finished the afternoon with 25 saves.

The high-powered Tomahawk offense scored first, as they have done in all but one of their games this season. All State defenseman Austin Lamer took a shot from the right point which was stopped by Katsma, but Sawyer Hanna was parked at the top of the crease and he tapped in the rebound

Reid Newkirk got the equalizer with a power play goal at 11:19, and then put the Bears up 2-1 with a short-handed goal with just 22 seconds left in the first period.

Tomahawk came roaring back in the second frame, out-shooting West Bend 13 to 6. Jonah Dickens tied the game with a high slap shot from the point on a power play. But that would end the Hatchets’ scoring, making this the first game that Tomahawk was held to less than 6 goals.

The score remained tied until late in the period when Logan Woods gave the Bears the lead again with a shot from the right faceoff circle that beat Seymour on the blocker side, just above the leg pad.

The third period continued the pattern of the game with hard skating, crisp passing, physical defense for both teams.

Reid Newkirk completed his hattrick with a power play goal that made the final score 4-2 with just over three minutes to play.
