Kevin Conley's game winner ends back and forth battle

Kevin Conley got a long pass from defenseman John Metzinger and fired a wrist shot from the top of the slot to give Wausau West a 4-3 overtime win over Notre Dame Academy on Saturday evening.

The Warriors and the Tritons traded goals during regulation, with Wausau scoring first and then NDA evening the score three times.

The Warriors took advantage of a Luke Davison charging penalty in the first period. Tanner Gould was standing on the top of the crease and got a pass from Marshall Oja from behind the net for a quick one-timer past Tritons goalie Chris Nell.

Gould had another chance during and NDA power play, when a Tritons defenseman mishandled the puck in his own zone and turned it over in the slot. Nell came up with a big save and the puck trickled just wide of the net.

Early in the second period, West got stuck in their defensive zone for an extended time. The Tritons were able to get fresh legs on the ice and put heavy pressure on West goalie Sam Wiegert. Eventually the fresh legs won out and Brett Gruber fired a shot from the slot that fit just inside the pipe at 5:19.

Notre Dame had the decided edge in speed, especially with West’s Kyle Lee not suited up for the game. But the Warriors were solid in their fundamentals and didn’t make many mistakes, limiting the Tritons opportunities. And West took advantage of the chances handed to them

Wausau regained the lead on another power play goal, this one by Tom Kilogore at 9:34 in the second. Kilgore took a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle. A Triton defenseman knocked the puck down with the shaft of his stick, but then it bounced up and over Nell's leg pad.

Notre Dame tied the game back up three minutes later with a 2 on 1 rush. Tony Stillwell timed his pass well to Riley Christensen who went top shelf to beat Wiegert.

With just over a minute left in the period, Marshall Oja battled for a loose puck in the corner and came out with it, skating down the goal line toward the net. A quick pass out to Seth Wage at the bottom of the faceoff circle gave him the angle on Nell, and Wage put the Warriors back on top 3-2.

Nobody holds a third period lead like Wausau West. But a one goal lead over a team with the firepower of Notre Dame is a daunting challenge for any team. A little too daunting on this night as Steven Phillips tied the game at the 7 minute mark. Mason Appleton skated out of the corner with the puck and found Phillips in the slot for the quick shot.

Phillips had a chance to give NDA their first lead just moments later. He got the puck and got behind the West defense for a one on one chance with Wiegert. But as he approached the net, Phillips looked down at the puck and Wiegert poke-checked it away from him.

Wausau West applied some late-period pressure to try to regain the lead, even hitting a post behind Nell at one point, but the third period ended in a 3-3 tie, sending it to overtime.
Overtime only lasted 1:12, when Conley ended it.
