Former Cardinals team captain enters first season as varsity head coach
Following the 2023/2024 season, Scott Parker retired after serving nearly four decades as varsity head coach for Chippewa Falls. Parker’s retirement created an opportunity.
Sometimes a job appears to be a perfect match. Matt Lukowitz grew up playing youth and high school hockey for Chippewa Falls and was team captain for varsity when he was in 11th & 12th grades. In addition, he coached the Bantam team for the past decade.
Let’s hear from Matt Lukowitz!
Congratulations on being named head coach! Thank you. I really appreciate it.
What emotions did you feel after learning you got the job? It was humbling and exciting. I am really excited. We have a special community. We have a rich history. Not every community has the support like we do.
What drew you into coaching? I love the game and after you stop playing it is like what is next. I wanted to give back to the game and coaching is a way to give back.
Who were your coaching mentors? Scott Parker…I played for him and was an assistant after graduating (from high school) for three years. Steve Freeman and Bob Ritzer. Dave Lohrei I learned a lot about the relationship aspect of coaching.
What is your coaching style or philosophy? I want the kids to work hard, have fun, and be good teammates. Working hard is non-negotiable.
Did you create your philosophy from any specific mentor? From a combination of people, not just hockey, but also former bosses at work. You learn along the way and find your way of doing it.
What would be a successful year one? We have a tough schedule. It’s hard to say…we have to play good hockey. The bar is high. We’ve had a lot of success. We expect to win and that can continue with hard work, having fun and being good teammates.
What message do you have for a young person that wants to become a coach? If you love the game and want to give back and pass on to the next generation then get involved in coaching. Try to find a way to give back.
We wish Matt Lukowitz and his Cardinals a great season!
Yours for hockey, Matt Carey
