The Marshfield Tigers were rude hosts on Thursday evening, downing the Tomahawk Hatchets 8-1 in a Great Northern Conference game. The game was a make-up from the postponement from January 23, 2012.

Both teams came out strong at the outset on the game, with lots of shots going in each direction. The Tigers got the first tally 7:31 into the game on a power play goal by junior Paige Johnson, which was assisted by seniors Emily Wolfe and Nicole Karl. Johnson also got the other score of the first period on an unassisted goal at the 11:45 mark. The teams went into their lockerrooms with the Tigers holding a 2-0 lead, in spite of the shots being even at 12 for the period.

The 2-0 score held up until late in the second period. That's when Johnson earned a Hat Trick, getting her third goal of the game a little over 12 minutes into the period. Wolfe picked up another assist on the power play goal. Just when it looked like the period was going to end with a 3-0 score, Tigers sophomore forward Katie Krier scored her first varsity goal with 21 seconds left. It was assisted by Karl and Johnson. The Tigers scored a mere 10 seconds later when Karl scored an unassisted goal. Shots in the second period were 11-4 in Marshfield's favor.

Marshfield picked up, in the third period, where they left off in the second, with Karl's second unassisted goal of the game only 1 minute into the frame. That made the score 6-0 and put the clock on run-time. However, the Tigers weren't done for the night. Freshman Nell Eichten got in on the scoring action, scoring her second goal of the season, on the power play, at the 6:24 mark. No assists were credited on the play. Tomahawk senior Kendall Nelson, the leading scorer in the conference, lit the lamp on an unassisted goal for the Hatchets just before the 10 minute mark to cut the lead to 7-1. Marshfield wasn't done yet, as Karl also earned a Hat Trick on the day by scoring in the last minute of play, with assists to Eichten and Wolfe. This also earned Wolfe a Playmaker on the game.

Marshfield freshman goalie Alexis Straughan finished the night with 21 saves on 22 shots, while her fellow freshman Destiny Hanke of Tomahawk, finished with 24 saves on 32 shots.

The game continued a strong surge in the second half of the season by the Tigers, showing they are still in the hunt to win the conference title. Over their past 7 games, they have a 6-0-1 record, including 5-0-1 after going against each team in the conference. During this span they have outscored their opponents by a margin of 32-3.

Overall, the Tigers season record stands at 10-5-1, including 7-2-1 in conference games. The Hatchets fall to 6-12 overall, and 4-6 against conference foes. Tomahawk laces 'em up again on Friday against the Northland Pines Eagles, in Eagle River, while the Tigers travel to Minocqua, to face the Lakeland Thunderbirds, on Monday.
