The goaltending tandem of Greta Woelber and Makeena Hutchison fueled a weekend sweep of the Glenview Stars in Waupun. The Hayward duo stopped 36 of 37 shots enroute to a 5-1 and 2-0 win to run the teams season record to 13-4-1. Hutchison’s shutout was her third of the season and the team’s fifth overall. Wisconsin has five more games before they break for the WIAA season.
In game one Wisconsin wasted no time getting a powerplay opportunity just three minutes into the game. Eleanor Adams carried a puck to the net from the corner where Rhylee Buesgen knocked home the rebound for a quick 1-0 Selects lead. Gabi Heuser made it 2-0 when she picked off a neutral zone pass and backed the Stars defenseman in before snapping a wrist shot past goaltender Sophie LeClair.
Glenview made it 2-1 late in the second period when Audrey Smith scored on an end-to-end shorthanded rush. Wisconsin answered quickly when Addisyn Buesgen slid a pass to Annika Olinski to finish a perfect 2 on 1 rush. Leading 3-1 into the third period, Ashley Slupe hammered a point shot off the crossbar for a 4-1 lead and Baylee Schuh scored her ninth goal of the year beating LeClair through the five-hole from the left dot.
Woelber finished with 20 saves in garnering her eighth win. LeClair stopped 24 of 29 shots for Glenview.
Game two was scoreless through two periods as the Selects peppered Glenview with 26 shots. At 13:40 of the third period Wisconsin finally found the back-of-the-net when Gabi Heuser took a great feed from Schuh and wired a wrist shot past LeClair for what would be the game winning goal. Rhylee Buesgen, who moved up from defense to play forward for the weekend, scored the insurance goal with just under five minutes to play for a 2-0 final score. "Rhylee showed her versatility," noted head coach Emily Bauer, "played with a lot of energy and scored two big goals on the weekend."
Hutchison registered the shutout making 16 saves. “Coming back from her injury last season, you can see Makenna getting stronger and more confident every game,” said Bauer. “We are so happy to have her back and healthy.”
The Selects will head to Hayward this weekend, for an unofficial homecoming for the seven Hayward players on the team. Wisconsin will play three games on the weekend against the Queens from Thunder Bay, Canada. All games are at the Hayward Sports Complex, Saturday at 2:00 and 7:30pm and Sunday 9am.
