Huettner adds three points in 6-0 win

Upon entering the South Wood County Rec Center Monday evening, one noticed displays prominently located on tables near the windows separating the lobby from the rink.

The three presentations honored Red Panther seniors Blake Weinfurter, Nicole Hassig, and Makayla Lee. The three girls would also be recognized at center ice during the first intermission of the Lakeland-Red Panthers game, but after the tears were shed and the roses were handed out, one player stood out.

Hassig knocked in two goals and added two assists to lead the Red Panthers past the visiting Thunderbirds 6-0 in a Great Northern Conference tilt.

Rachel Metz popped in a rebound to open the scoring at the 4:15 mark, with an assist to Brianne Huettner.

Just over four minutes later, Hassig scored her first goal when her shot trickled under the pads of Lakeland goalie Tori Parus to make it 2-0, with an assist to Metz.

Huettner got into the act with her goal from the slot 54 seconds later. Hassig earned her first assist.

The period would end with the Red Panthers holding a 4-0 lead after Rachel McNamara steamed down the left side and fired a laser into the back of the net with 1:25 left in the stanza. Brooke Maslinski earned a helper on the play.

Shots favored the home girls (16-3) in the period.

Hassig tallied her second goal with a wrister from the top of the left circle at the 2:37 mark of the second, with an assist to Huettner, to make it 5-0.

That's how the period would end, with the Red Panthers outshooting their foes once again by a margin of 16-3.

Molly Kuckkahn scored at the 6:14 mark of the third to send the game to run time. Hassig notched her second helper on the play.

The home team held a 12-2 shot edge in the final period.

Freshman Emily Bubla earned her fourth shutout of the season with an eight-save performance. Parus played very well, stopping 38 shots on her end for the T-Birds.

The Red Panthers (9-11, 8-1 GNC) host Medford Friday night at Ice Hawks Arena, while Lakeland (0-15, 0-10 GNC) travel to face the Northern Edge on Friday.
