Marshfield earns revenge in 2-0 GNC win

Six weeks ago at the South Wood County Rec Center, the Point-Rapids Red Panthers eked out a 4-3 win over the visiting Marshfield Tigers. Tonight, the host Tigers returned the favor as they got two goals from junior defenseman Paige Johnson and a shutout from freshman goalie Alexis Straughan in a 2-0 win over the Red Panthers at the Marshfield Youth Ice Center, as the Tigers handed Point-Rapids its first conference loss of the year.

The Tigers controlled play for most of the first period, but weren't able to score until they went on a power play with slightly more than three minutes remaining.

Johnson gathered up the puck deep in the Marshfield zone and set sail for the other end. A few nifty moves later, her shot from the left circle beat Red Panthers freshman netminder Emily Bubla on the glove side for a 1-0 lead at the 14:30 mark for the unassisted power play goal.

The Tigers held a 13-3 shot edge in the period.

Johnson made it 2-0 in the middle of the second when she grabbed the puck off a face-off and zipped a shot from the high slot through traffic that bounced off two shin pads and snuck through Bubla's five-hole at the 11:51 mark. Jala Zahn got an assist on the score.

The visitors started to get back into the game, outshooting the hosts by a margin of 6-2 in the stanza.

The Tigers had a couple power play chances, but the Red Panthers (3-4 in PK) killed off both opportunities.

The teams exchanged time-outs late in the game. The Red Pathers were finally able to pull the goalie for an extra attacker with 25 seconds left, and that strategy almost backfired when Emily Wolfe's shot from her blue line bounced off the left post with ten seconds left to play.

Both goalies were perfect in the period, combining for 14 saves (Straughan 10, Bubla 4).

Straughan earned her fifth shutout of the year, making 19 saves in the winning effort. Bubla stopped 17 shots on the other end for the Red Panthers.

The Tigers (8-5-1, 5-2-1 GNC) will host the Northern Edge next Monday, while the Red Panthers (8-11, 7-1 GNC) will host Lakeland at the South Wood County Rec Center in Wisconsin Rapids.
