Red Panthers score four short-handed goals in contest

Sarah Peplinski and Rachel Metz each scored hat tricks to lead the Point-Rapids Red Panthers past the Northern Edge 7-0 on a blustery, cold Monday evening at the Antigo Ice Arena at the Langlade County Fairgrounds.

The Red Panthers' seven tallies included an amazing four short-handed goals, with three of them coming in a span of less than five minutes in the second period.

Metz started the scoring early in the first when she came roaring down the left side and snapped a shot from the left circle that beat Edge goalie Sophie Schmidt at the 3:56 mark.

Late in the period, 'Sarah Pep' scored from the low left side to make it 2-0 at 12:23.

The visitors held a huge 21-5 shot edge in the period.

After two early second period penalties on the Red Panthers, senior captain Makayla Lee grabbed a puck at the blue line and raced in on the goalie, beating her high on the glove side at 2:50 of the period. The other senior captain, Nicole Hassig, earned a helper on the 5-on-4 short-handed play.

While the same penalty was still in effect, Peplinski scored at 3:38, with an assist to Metz.

Four minutes later, during a delayed penalty on the Edge, Metz scored a shorty when she made a deke and slipped in a back-hander to make it 5-0 at 7:30 of the second.

The period ended with the guests holding a 13-9 shot edge.

The final period began with not only a shorty, but an assist for goalie Emily Bubla on the goal from Metz, completing her hat trick at the 0:46 mark.

The final score was an even-strength goal, notched by Metz on a re-direct from the slot at 12:20, with assists to Hassig and Brianne Huettner.

Bubla earned her third shutout with an 18-save performance. Schmidt had a much busier go of it, stopping 37 pucks for the Edge. Shots in the period were 10-4, in favor of Point-Rapids.

The Edge (2-9-1, 1-6-1 GNC) travel to Marshfield next Monday, while the Red Panthers (8-10-0, 7-0-0 GNC) will visit the same Tigers this Friday.
