Spartans down Cardinals 8-1

The Superior Spartans overwhelmed the Fond du Lac Cardinals in the final game of the second round at the Showdown in Titletown Saturday evening, walking away with an 8-1 win. Fondy scored first, but it was all Superior after that initial mishap.

The Cardinals scored first on a power play goal by Michael O’Leary with Brett Bukowski in the penalty box for the Spartans. They let Bukowski out after that goal, and it took him 18 seconds to tie the game and make up for his earlier transgression.

The Mikel brothers took over after that, swarming and cycling around the Fondy net and generally making life miserable for Cardinal goalie Charlie Blagoue. Crisp passing from Steven and Daniel followed by sharpshooting by Gerald connected for two goals giving the Spartans a 3-1 lead after the first period.

The Spartans were playing without defenseman Brady Uotinen and forwards Dane Sislo and Aaron Miller. All three were injured in Friday’s loss to Notre Dame, but Superior had more than enough fire power to handle Fond du Lac without them.

Bukowski scored again four minutes into the second period with a wrist shot from the point through traffic that may have deflected off a Fondy stick. Steven Mikel scored next on a beautiful three on two rush with Gerald and Aaron Johnson, passing and weaving their way through the Fondy defense until Steven was alone in front of Blagoue with the puck.

Nolan Holcombe, Daniel Litchke, and and Gerald Mikel (hat trick) tallied in the third period to make the final 8-1 score.
