Wildcats take consolation game in Pines Classic

Nina Andersen's third period goal gave the University School co-op girls hockey team a 1-0 victory over Northland Pines in the consolation game of the Pines Classic Hockey Tournament on a frigid Saturday morning in Eagle River.  The previous evening the Wildcats lost their opening round game to Hayward 4-3 in overtime.

Simply put, Saturday morning's game was a good one.  The two teams moved back and forth in the famous wooden-domed ice arena in Eagle River.  USM out shot the Eagles 35-15, but Pines' senior goalie Kim VanBrunt stopped all but one of them.

That one shot came at 10:02 of the third period. Breaking out of the USM zone, senior Margot Peterson passed the puck along the left boards into center ice to senior Megan Bailey.  Bailey tipped the puck to Andersen who was swinging past.  The speedy freshman raced out of the reach of a Pines defender and headed toward the net.  As she closed in on VanBrunt, Andersen snapped a shot that eluded the goalie and ultimately gave the Wildcats a well-deserved win.

In the game USM's sophomore goalkeeper Heidi Golembiewski stopped every shot the Eagles took to add another shutout to her record.

USM is now 13-6-1.  The Wildcats take to the road again on Friday to play a 7:00 p.m. game at Black River Falls.
