Knutson tops 'Toppers with nine point afternoon

Theresa Knutson scored six goals and added three assists to lead the top-ranked Onalaska Hilltoppers past the Point-Rapids Red Panthers 10-2 Saturday afternoon at the K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point.

Knutson opened the scoring when she took advantage of a fall by a Red Panthers defenseman and skated in on a breakaway. Her shot hit the right post and appeared to bounce out in front of Red Panther goalie Emily Bubla, but was ruled a goal by the officials to give Onalaska a 1-0 lead at the 8:32 mark.

Just 20 seconds later, Knutson scored again from the slot on a nice pass from Ellie Meyer to make it 2-0, with another assist to Kianna Kalmes.

The visitors outshot the home girls by a tally of 12-4, and the only thing the Red Panthers fans had to cheer was the Parents Day ceremony held during the first intermission.

The Hilltoppers scored twice early in the second period to take a 4-0 lead.

Lucy Anderholm scored from the slot on a shot that just snuck under Bubla's pads at the 3:58 mark, with assists to Jacyn Reeves and Jamie Weilandt. Then, just under four minutes later Knutson scored again off a face off from the right circle. Baylee Darling earned a helper on the play.

The Red Panthers got on the board at 9:01 when Rachel Metz punched in a rebound past Ona goalie Jeanalyn Schindler to cut the lead to 4-1, with an assist to Nicole Hassig.

That's as close as the Red Panthers got, as the Hilltoppers dug in their crampons and started up the hill, scoring two more times in a one minute span late in the period.

At 14:11, Darling popped in a rebound from the low right side, with an assist to Knutson, and then at 15:11 Knutson had a semi-bustout and scored from the high slot area with help from Meyer to make it 6-1.

Point-Rapids (7-10) cut the lead to 6-2 when Sarah Peplinski went coast-to-coast and dropped the puck off to Hassig, whose shot was put back by Metz for her second goal at 16:02 for a power play goal.

Shots in the period showed Onalaska with a 16-7 edge.

The Hilltoppers scored early in the third with a goal by Knutson, with assists to Meyer (earned her playmaker) and Jayda Hoerres to extend the lead to 7-2.

The guests scored thrice in the last 3:20 to account for the final score. Darling knocked in a rebound at 13:40 with an assist to Knutson; Knutson scored at 16:00 with an assist to Kelsey Seiler; and Darling earned her hat trick with a goal at 16:17, with help from Knutson.

The third period shot edge was held by Onalaska (17-8).

Schindler stopped 17 shots for the victory, while Bubla made 35 saves for the hosts on a busy afternoon for the freshman netminder.

The Hilltoppers (17-2) will host Viroqua on Tuesday night, while the Red Panthers travel to Antigo Monday evening to take on the Northern Edge.
