Hurricanes Advance to Championship in Pines Classic

In Friday night's thrilling overtime game, the Wildcats played one of their best games of the season against one of Wisconsin's premier girls hockey teams.  Penalties marred USM's efforts as the Hurricanes scored three power play goals, including one in overtime, to win the game.

Hayward opened the scoring in the first period on a four-against-four goal, which was the only even strength goal the Wildcats would concede in the weekend's tournament.  Senior Hannah Dvorak passed the puck to senior defenseman Kelly Ahlgren who skated down the boards, cut toward the net and put the puck in on a low shot from the side of the net at 8:19.

USM then scored the next three goals.  The Wildcats tied the score late in the first period.  Forechecking ferociously, Bailey gained control of the puck on the left mid-boards in the Hayward zone.  She lined a pass to Andersen who was heading to the net from the right.  Andersen tipped the puck past Hayward's starting goalie Sarah Miley at 14:40.

USM took the lead in the first minute of the second period.  Taking a face-off in the USM end, senior Sally James drew the puck toward Andersen who tipped it past a Hayward defenseman.  Andersen zoomed past the defender to get the puck. She and Bailey headed toward the Hayward end on a two-on-one.  Nearing the circle in the Hayward end,  Andersen pushed the puck over to Bailey who moved in and fired a wrist shot past Miley at 0:59.

USM used its own power play to take a 3-1 lead. As the Wildcats worked the puck around the Hayward zone, sophomore Abby Wigdale got the puck in the right corner and passed it behind the net to her cousin, senior Ellie Wigdale in the far corner.  Ellie Wigdale skated out from the corner toward the net and threaded an acute angled shot into the Hayward net at 9:33.

Hayward changed goalies after the goal, replacing Miley with sophomore Noel Weber.

The Wildcats maintained the two goal lead into the third period when penalties reared their ugly head and the Hayward power play took the lead away from USM.  Two tripping calls gave Hayward a five-on-three advantage.  Freshman defenseman Holly Turnbull sent the puck into the left corner to her sister Cheyenne Turnbull who moved around a USM defender and passed it out front to Ahlgren.  The USM defenders could not get to her in time, so she calmly lofted a shot over Golembiewski, who had dived to try to stop the shot at 8:56.

The goal still left USM short-handed, and Hayward soon tallied another power play goal. As the Hurricanes moved the puck in the USM zone, Cheyenne Turnbull got it at the blue line, moved to the center of the line, and blasted an unassisted shot into the net at 10:08.

The game moved into overtime.  While scrapping for the puck along the boards, both the Hayward player and the USM player tumbled to the ice, but it was only junior Laine Tomesch who received the penalty, giving the Hurricanes an overtime power play.  They used it to win the game.  This time it was Holly Turnbull who took a shot from the point that went in for the score.  Cheyenne Turnbull and Ahlgren had assists on the play.

In the game, Golembiewski made 24 saves, while Miley and Weber made 11 saves between them.
