The first game of the division one state tournament between the #4 Brookfield Stars and #1 Chippewa Falls Cardinals was a barn burner that needed extra time to find a winner, but in the end it was the underdog Brookfield Stars who came away with the victory on the back of three power play goals and one goal with an extra attacker from a pulled goalie.

The teams traded power plays pulling guys down on near-break away chances in the first period but it was an otherwise clean period, evenly played.

Brookfield got on the board first, doing what Eau Claire Memorial and SPASH couldn't do in the sectional round and putting one in against Chippewa Falls. Cooper Simon took a long lead pass from Drew Sparacino for a 2-on-1, and fed it across to Jack Templeton who scored high on the glove side to make it 1-0 with just 1:43 left in the first.

The lead only lasted a few minutes whoever as Chipppewa Falls evened it up 2:15 into the second period when Jackson Hoem fired a shot from the top of the circles that hit goalie Augustus Jones in the mask and bounced behind him where Mason Johnson poked it in to tie the game.

Johnson gave the Cardinals the lead at the 12:06 mark. He dangled through a Brookfield defenseman's legs and beat the goalie five-hole to make it 2-1.

Johnson finished the natural hat trick at the 12:47 mark taking a feed from Drew Bowe and cutting across the net to make it 3-1.

Chippewa Falls extended the lead just 1:30 later when Johnson hit Hoem in the slot and Hoem fired a blistering wrist shot into the corner to make it 4-1.

Brookfield was still alive however and with 49 seconds left in the period they scored a power play goal to cut the lead to two. Drew Sparacino fired a shot from the point and Colin Masek tipped it in front for the goal.

Gus Thorp exended the lead 7:39 into the third period. He took a feed from Jackson Hoem in the high slot and buried a wrister in the top of the net to make it 5-2.

The Stars narrowed the lead with a power play goal at 9:46. Josh Wasielewski fired a shot from up high and it was tipped in front by Harrison Kennedy to make it a 5-3 game.

Brookfield added another power play goal with 6:07 left. Mick Marlow made a save on a Sparacino shot through traffic but Masek was there to pick up the rebound and put it in and make it 5-4.

Brookfield tied the game at five with 14 seconds left on the clock with the goalie pulled. Wasielewski scored from the point through heavy traffic with the extra man.

Brookfield landed the OT game winner at 5:58 of the overtime period. Cooper Simon fired a shot from high in the zone and it clipped the Chippewa Falls defenseman and just barely tucked itself inside the pipe for the overtime game winner.

The Stars were 3-for-6 on the power play in the game, and it proved to be the difference maker.

Mick Marlow had 21 saves in the loss for the Cardinals, and Augustus Jones had 25 in the win for the Stars.
