Over the weekend the story on the right appeared on the Madison sites. They state that Oregon's Andrew Jicha (155 goals) had surpassed state record-holder Jacob Thousand (154 goals) to become the all-time leading goal scorer in WIAA history. In the article, they attribute the record numbers to Elite Prospects.

With all due respect to Elite Prospects, we do visit their site quite often, WIAA hockey pre-exists their site. So we were skeptical. We believed that an earlier player scored more goals then either of these two young men.

It took some digging through the Madison Memorial archives by coach Peter Brenner, but we found that a skater from the 70s named Mark Johnson scored 158 goals and recorded 115 assists in 65 high school varsity games. That name may sound familiar to Wisconsin hockey fans. He still hangs around hockey rinks in the Madison area.

Since reaching 155 on January 5th, Jicha has added 11 more goals, bringing him to 166. That, we believe, makes him the new leader.

Editor's Note: At best we can say that Andrew Jicha is the *known* all-time leading goal scorer in the state. That said, there are still more seasons without stats entered than those with.
