Edgewood Tops Wausau West in NDA Showcase

By Bill Berg, WiPH Staff, 12/30/23, 7:00AM CST

The top ranked Madison Edgewood Crusaders bounced back from their first loss of the season on Wednesday to down the Wausau West Warriors 4-2 on Thursday at the Notre Dame Academy Showcase at Cornerstone Community Center.

Parks Guenther started the game in goal for Wausau West, while Hayden Reuhl got the nod for Edgewood.

On the first shift of the game, Owen Koch took a pass from Owen Porter and came down the right side of the slot. He deftly slid a back hand shot between Guenther’s pads to put Edgewood up 1-0 just 36 seconds in.

Despite the fast start, that would be the only scoring in the first period. Guenther stopped the other 14 shots he saw in the first. Reuhl stopped all 5 shots he faced in the first.

The second period also got off to a raucous start with West tying the game, Edgewood regaining the lead, and West tying it again, all in less than three minutes. It started with a two on one for the Warriors.  Brody Brimacombe entered the Crusaders zone with the puck and passed to Caden Bohlin for the goal at the 47 second mark.

Davis Hahlbleib knocked in a rebound of a Matt Richter shot to put Edgewood back up just 40 seconds later.

At 2:55 Chase Crass got his own rebound and put it past Reuhl to tie the score at two each.

Things settled down until, with just under two minutes to go in the second, Koch picked up a loose puck in the slot and flipped a back hand shot over Guenther to put the Crusaders back up 3-2.

Guenther recorded 8 saves in the second, while Reuhl stopped 9 of 11.

Five minutes into the third, Porter came up the ice with the puck and with Carter Rosenberg on a two on one. Porter got near the net and passed the puck toward Rosenberg, but the West defenseman got a piece of it, and the puck just slowly trickled toward the slot. Rosenberg had to race two trailing West defenders to the puck. He won that race and slapped the loose puck in for the final 4-2 Edgewood margin.

Reuhl finished the game with 23 saves on 25 shots. Guenther stopped 31 of 35.
