The Hudson Raiders got off to a slow start on Saturday afternoon in Stevens Point, getting out-shot 15-4 in a scoreless first period against the Wisconsin Valley Union. The Raiders rallied and beat the Eagles 2-1 in our Game of the Week.

There were scoring chances for each side in the first period, but the defences were doing a good job of keeping the front of the net clean. Freshman goalie Issie Wojcik stopped all four shots for Union, and sophomore Sophie Thompson stopped all 15 shots she saw for the Raiders.

The Eagles scored first, halfway through the second period. Coming into the Hudson zone on a three on two rush, WVU got the puck to play-maker Jenna Jones in the left circle. Jones positioned herself for a shot, but instead fired a hard pass to Lily Cichy parked at the back door. Cichy wasted not time and buried the puck in the back of the net.

The Raiders got the puck to the front of the WVU goal late in the period. After Wojcik made a pair of saves, Juliana Cahoon poked the loose puck between the pads to tie the game at one each.

Hudson out-shot WVU 12-7 in the second period, and kept up the pressure into the third.

With three and a half minutes to play, Brooklin Monicken tried for a wrap-around goal, but was denied by Wojcik. Monicken regained possession of the puck and passed it to Cahoon in the slot. A quick one-timer from Cahoon got over Wojcik’s out-stretched glove for the game winner.

Union pulled their goalie late in the game and got a couple of good chances, but Thompson held strong.
