Strong penalty killing unit carries the day

The University School hockey team defeated Fond du Lac Goodrich 5-2 Saturday at Fond du Lac.

After the victory, USM's assistant coach Matt Roadhouse commented on the game.  "We controlled the play during the game and frustrated them.  Unfortunately, we had lots of penalties." USM's nine penalties did give the Cardinals hope that glimmered like rims on a brand new car, "But," Roadhouse continued, "our penalty killing was too strong."

USM scored the game's first goal midway through the first period. During a face off in the Fond du Lac end, the puck went to Kenny Servis on the boards.  Servis pushed it back to Joey Judge at the point.  Judge ripped a low shot that beat the Fond du Lac goalie Charles Blagoue at 8:01.

The Wildcats made it 2-0 at 5:13 of the second period.  Defenseman Nathan Burke chipped the puck off the boards from the USM zone out to Servis in center ice.  Servis headed into the Fond du Lac zone on a two-on-one with Corey Roadhouse.  Servis passed it to Roadhouse who fired a quick shot into the net.

Later in the second period the Wildcats took a three-goal lead while skating four on four. Judge got the puck at the blue line in the Fond du Lac zone.  He passed it across the line to Burke.  Burke lined a shot on net. The puck bounced out and USM's Duncan Brown got the rebound.  Brown whirled like a carousel and fired the puck past Blagoue at 11:15.

The Wildcats increased the lead early in the third period.  Ryan Revolinski gained control of the puck in center ice and rifled it toward the Cardinals end.  The puck hit the side of the face mask of Charlie Borges and caromed to the stick of Ashton Wackym.  Wackym wheeled across the zone and gunned his shot into the net at 3:00.

Fond du Lac finally took advantage of a USM penalty.  Jack Nejedlo passed the puck to Michael OLeary on the side boards.  OLeary furthered it to Keegan Acheson in the left corner.  Acheson fired the puck toward the net.  USM goaltender Bryan Botcher expected it to be tipped, but the puck continued on and went between his pads and into the net at 5:43.

USM made it 5-1 several minutes later while killing a penalty. Burke got the puck in the USM zone and sent it toward the blue line.  The Fond du Lac defender tried to keep it in, but he missed it.  Roadhouse was coming at him like a Mack truck at full throttle.  Roadhouse raced to the sliding puck, got it, and took off on a breakaway.  He crossed the Fond du Lac line, moved into the slot, and blasted the puck into the net.

The Cardinals got a late goal. During a scramble in front of the USM net, Shane Sabel hit the puck to Nejedlo who swung at it and started to fall. His skate hit the puck and it trickled into the net at 16:23.

In the game Blagoue made 28 saves, and Botcher made 31 saves.

Fond du Lac is now 6-7-1.  USM is 10-5.  The Wildcats return home to face the Germantown co-op at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
