Warriors score four in second to control game

Wausau West and Wisconsin Rapids met at the South Wood County Rec Center Tuesday evening in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey Game of the Week, and between great saves by goalies and well-placed goal posts, it looked like the game would stay scoreless. In the first period alone, there were at least three 'pipes' and several spectacular saves by Rapids goalie Cole Paulsen and West goalie Sam Wiegert.

But in the end, West used two goals each by John Feemster and Kyle Lee to skate to a 6-0 win over the hosts in a Wisconsin Valley Conference battle.

Paulsen made a nice glove save and kicked out his left pad to make another before the game was three minutes old. He should have taken that as an omen of things to come.

The first period ended with no scoring, despite a combined five power play chances. West held a 9-6 shot advantage in the period.

It took 43 seconds for the Warriors to score on a power play to begin the second period.

A shot by Tom Kilgore ricocheted off the back wall and bounced out in front to the left of the goalie, where Feemster pitch-forked the puck over Paulsen's shoulder for a 1-0 lead, with another assist to Seth Wage.

Zach Campbell almost tied the game for Rapids just under five minutes into the period, but his shot from the right dot clanged off the post for a missed power play opportunity.

Two minutes later, Lee showed his penalty kill prowess when he took the puck down the left side, deked the goalie, and slid the puck into a mostly open net for a short-handed goal at 6:21. Tanner Gould earned an assist on the play.

West added its third goal with just over three minutes left. Dan Schlais took a pass from Kilgore in the slot and went for the big rocket, only to partially whiff on the shot. The motion appeared to fool the netminder and the puck slid through the 'five' to make it 3-0.

Less than a minute later, West took advantage of the power play once again. Feemster's blast from the right circle found the back of the net at the 14:18 mark, with helpers to Lee and Wage.

West outshot Rapids 18-5 in the stanza.

In the third period, West added to its lead at the 9:03 mark when Justin Anderson shelfed a shot from the left circle to make it 5-0. Gould earned his second assist of the night on the scoring chance.

The final tally was added by Lee at 15:45 when he tapped in a rebound, assisted by John Metzinger and Andrew Lee.

Shots in the period were even at 12 apiece.

Wiegert stopped 23 shots in earning his fourth shutout of the year. Paulsen was far busier at his end, making 33 saves for Rapids.

West improves to 8-4-1 (5-0-1 WVC), while Rapids drops to 8-6 (4-2 WVC).
