Karl's hat trick leads Tigers over Thunderbirds

Senior captain Nicole Karl scored a natural hat trick in the first period to lead the Marshfield Tigers to a 7-1 victory over the Lakeland Thunderbirds on Monday night in Marshfield. A few fans even joined in the celebration by tossing their hats onto the ice.

Marshfield's Char Tierney initiated the game's scoring at the 5:49 mark of the first period. Paige Johnson and Karl assisted on the goal. Lakeland evened the score a couple minutes later when Natalie Sell scored from close range, beating Tiger goalie Alexis Straughan. That's when Karl took over, scoring 31 seconds after Sell and then adding two more goals over the course of the next six minutes. Tierney assisted on Karl's second goal. The first period ended with Marshfield leading 4-1. The Tigers outshot the Thunderbids 20 to 3 in the opening period.

The second period started out the same way the first ended, with Marshfield controlling the play in their offensive zone. Johnson scored less than four minutes into the period, with an assist from Karl. Also in the second period the Tigers' Tori Esser scored, unassisted, making the game 6-1. The second period also saw the Tigers take 20 shots while the Thunderbids had 4.

The game didn't change much in the third period, with the play continuing to stay in the Tigers' offensive end. The Tigers took another 21 shots on Lakeland goalie Megan Hudy, but only managed to get one into the net. Senior Emily Wolfe scored ten minutes into the period to cap the scoring on the night. making the final score Marshfield 7, Lakeland 1. The Thunderbirds were not credited with a shot on goal in the final period.

Marshfield evened its overall record at 5-5, and improved to 3-2 in the Great Northern Conference. Lakeland dropped to 0-10 and 0-6. The Tigers travel to Medford on Friday, January 13th to take on the Raiders, while the Thunderbirds host the Tomahawk Hatchets on Thursday, January 12th.
