Lead Badger North Conference Standings

After a dramatic come back overtime thrilling victory over Reedsburg-Wis Dells, Waunakee packed their bags and headed to Baraboo for another Badger North conference showdown against the feisty Thunderbirds.

Some fans speculate it is the new breezer covers, others think this is the time of the year when the Warrior skaters just turn it up a notch. Either theory works because Waunakee turned in a powerful offensive performance, shutting out Baraboo 6-0 to tally their fourth conference victory and spot on top of the standings.

Sophomore defenseman Keegan Ford opened the scoring with a blistering slap shot from the point just 1:25 into the contest on an early power play, with an assist going to brother Jason. At the 12:43 mark, Jason Ford found the back of the net with assists going to Keegan and junior defenseman Devin Lysne.

While the game wasn't stopped as in Drew Brees' case, history was made with Ford's goal. With his second point in the period, Jason Ford became the all time leading scorer in Waunakee HS hockey history. The previous record set by Mark Schlappi (1993-1997) was 149. Ford racked up three more points on the evening, giving him 153 for his career and counting.

In the second period, senior forward Hunter Darger slipped one on the far side of the goal at 8:00, again assisted by Lysne. Lysne who hadn't laced up skates in several years, filled in most admirably for senior defenseman Connor Scheffler who was out dealing with family matters. The Thunderbirds were continually frustrated by Waunakee's speed and intensity on the forecheck and just 15 seconds after Darger's goal they dug the puck out of their net again as the senior Ford rammed home his second goal of the night.

The Waunakee offensive pressure continued into the third stanza as senior forward Ron Zaleski and junior linemate Blake Anderson each lit the lamp to make the final score Waunakee 6, Baraboo 0.

Senior netminder Mitch Horras turned away all 14 T-Bird shots to earn the shut out, as the Warriors netted their 6 goals on 36 shots.

The Warrior Road Show continues as they travel to Eble Ice Arena on Tuesday (1/10) and Onalaska on Friday (1/13) before returning to the friendly confines of the Ice Pond on Jan. 21.
