Win gives Point-Rapids sole possession of GNC lead

Tenth-ranked Northland Pines Eagles threw everything they could at Point-Rapids goalie Emily Bubla Monday evening.

Thirty-five pucks and at least one player invaded the freshman netminder's space, but she repelled all shots and shook off a slashing the goalie penalty to earn her second shutout of the year in a 2-0 win over the visiting Eagles Monday night at the South Wood County Rec Center in Wisconsin Rapids in Wisconsin Prep Hockey's Girls' Game of the Week.

The victory gave the Red Panthers a two-point lead in the Great Northern Conference standings over Northland Pines.

The game began with lots of back-and-forth action, but no scoring until more than midway through the first period.

Nicole Hassig snuck down the left side of the ice and loosed a shot on Pines goalie Kim Van Brunt. The sophomore made the first save, but the rebound was grabbed by Rachel Metz and her shot dribbled off the goalie for a 1-0 Red Panthers lead at 10:29 of the first.

The quiet first period--scoresheet-wise--would show the guests holding a 9-6 shot edge.

The second period was a penalty-fest--ten minutes for the home squad and four for the guests--but the only goal would be a power play score by Metz, when she corralled a loose puck in the left circle and sent a laser past Van Brunt's left leg pad to give the Red Panthers a 2-0 lead at the 4:08 mark. Brianne Huettner and Hassig each chalked up helpers on the play.

Pines failed to convert on three power play chances late and the period ended with a two-goal lead for the home team, even though they were outshot 14-10 in the stanza.

The majority of the third period was played on the man-advantage, but neither team was able to score on special teams and the Red Panthers walked off with a hard-fought victory.

Point-Rapids was unable to capitalize on five power play opportunities in the period, while Pines failed on one chance. In the period, Pines outshot Point-Rapids 12-7.

Bubla played stellar in net, stopping all 35 shots, while Van Brunt was efficient at her end as well, stopping 21 of 23.

The Red Panthers host Tomahawk Friday, while the Eagles host the Northern Edge Friday at the world-famous Dome in Eagle River.

(NOTE: This is the first win over Northland Pines for seniors Makayla Lee, Nicole Hassig, and Blake Weinfurter.)
