Young USM team is gaining valuable experience

After the game USM's co-head coach Doug Coleman said, "I thought it was a good game for us.  We played well.  We played a full game as a team.  We're young but gaining experience."

USM dominated the game. The Wildcats took 42 shots on goal while allowing the Silver Eagles only 8 shots during the game.

The Wildcats started by outshooting Monona Grove 16-1 in the first period alone, but USM was unable to score a goal in the opening 17 minutes.

The Wildcats finally scored their first goal early in the second period.  During a delayed penalty call, USM pulled sophomore goaltender Bryan Botcher for an extra skater. Senior Corey Roadhouse snared the puck and skated down the right boards into the Monona Grove zone.  As he moved deep into the zone, Roadhouse crossed a pass to senior Ashton Wackym who was trailing the play on the far side.  Wackym received the pass, moved into the left circle, and discharged a wrist shot that flew under the glove of Monona Grove's junior goalie Matt Zapp at 5:28.

The Wildcats did not score again in the second period, but they wore the Silver Eagles down, thereby allowing themselves to score three goals in the third period.

USM's second goal came on a power play in the opening minute of the third period.  As the Wildcats worked the puck around the Monona Grove zone, it went to sophomore Duncan Brown at the blue line.  He passed it along the line to senior Nathan Burke.  Burke skated to the middle of the blue line then sent the puck to Wackym in the left circle.  Wackym quickly rocketed a shot into the net at 0:47.

USM made it 3-0 when sophomore defenseman Vadim Sukanov made an end-to-end rush and finished the uplay by firing the puck past Zapp from the slot for an unassisted goal at 9:02.

The Wildcats tallied their final goal at 14:25 of the third period.  Junior Steven Swanson won control of the puck in the left corner of the Monona Grove end.  He skated out front and swept a pass to Brown on the far edge of the crease. Brown immediately snapped the puck through a gap in far side of net to make the final score 4-0.

In the game Zapp made 38 saves, while Botcher collected another shut out by making 8 saves.

Monona Grove's record is now 2-10 while USM improved its record to 8-5 with the victory.  The Wildcats next game is at USM at 7:00 p.m. on Friday against Providence Catholic Central of Lenox, Illinois.  Originally the Wildcats were to play Green Bay Notre Dame Academy on Friday, but Notre Dame had scheduling conflicts and could not play.
