Three second-period goals not enough for Red Panthers

The Arrowhead Warhawks scored twice in the first period, and then saw their lead slip away when the Point-Rapids Red Panthers scored three goals in the second period, but the Warhawks recovered by scoring the game's final two goals to earn a 4-3 win in the Schwan Cup Green Division third place game held at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, MN Friday evening.

Courtney Krueger started the scoring for Arrowhead when she punched in a rebound past Red Panthers goalie Emily Bubla at the 4:24 mark of the first period. Makenna Thomas earned an assist on the play.

The lead increased to two goals with just under three minutes left in the period when Jamie Musbach scored from the slot after a nice pass from Krueger.

Arrowhead held an 11-5 shot advantage in the period.

The Red Panthers looked glum as they waited to jump back on the ice for the second period, but that turned to happiness when they scored two goals in a 27-second span early to tie the contest at two.

Nicole Hassig took a pass from Brianne Huettner and set sail for the Arrowhead goal. Her shot from the mid-slot beat Arrowhead goalie Hanna Nicholson to cut the lead to one goal.

Less than a half-minute later, Huettner grabbed a face-off in the slot and snapped an on-ice shot that snuck between Nicholson's right skate and the post just 1:42 into the second. Rachel Metz got an assist on the play.

Midway through the period, the Red Panthers took advantage of an Arrowhead penalty to take the lead. Makayla Lee whipped a pass across the crease from the left corner to Hassig, who was sitting on the back door. She did not disappoint as her shot hit twine to give the Red Panthers a 3-2 lead at the 8:56 mark.

After all that, heartache came for the Red Panthers when Arrowhead took advantage of a defensive mix-up and scored on a 2-on-1 rush. Thomas took a pass from Sara Hopkins and found the back of the net from the slot area to tie the game at three with just 18 ticks remaining on the second period clock. Hannah Bird also received an assist.

In the period, shots were even at 11 apiece.

Each team had a power play chance early in the third but neither team was able to convert.

Bird scored the game-winner for Arrowhead at the 7:41 mark of the final period when she grabbed a turnover in the left circle, skated to the high slot and snapped a shot that beat Bubla high on the glove side. Thomas earned her second assist of the game on the play.

The Red Panthers took a time-out with 3:25 left, and were aided by an Arrowhead penalty with 2:15 remaining. Coach Hayli Hupp pulled the goalie in favor of an extra attacker, and despite the 6-on-4 advantage for nearly two minutes, were unable to score and as the horn sounded the Warhawks emerged as a 4-3 winner.

Shots in the third showed Arrowhead holding an 8-7 margin.

For the winners, Nicholson played a solid game, stopping 20 of 23 shots, while Bubla earned 26 saves for the Red Panthers.
