Game-winner deflects off Red Panther skater

There were many bounces of the puck during the first three-plus periods of play between the Metro Lynx and the Point-Rapids Red Panthers, but none decided the game until the 5:07 mark of the overtime period when a pass/shot bounced off the skate of a Point-Rapids defender and skipped into the net to give the Lynx a 2-1 hard-fought OT battle Thursday evening at the Schwan Cup in Blaine, MN.

Most of the first period expired before a team got on the board.

After the Red Panthers went one player down due to a penalty at the 12:20 mark of the first, star forward Lizzi Schieldt grabbed a loose puck behind the net, skated out to the front and ripped a shot past Red Panthers goalie Emily Bubla to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead on the power play goal just 11 seconds into the man advantage.

The period ended with the Lynx holding a 9-4 shot edge.

Midway through the second period, the Red Panthers evened the score.

Nicole Hassig battled hard for several seconds behind the net, and then sent a pass out to Makayla Lee in the slot, who snapped a shot past Lynx goalie Katie Roe at the 7:04 mark of the stanza, with assists to Hassig and Molly Kuckkahn.

Second period shots showed the Red Panther holding a 10-8 advantage.

The third period was scoreless, as Point-Rapids edged the Lynx in shots, 9-7 in the period.

As the game went to overtime, the Red Panthers attacked the Lynx net, putting several shots on Roe that she was able to steer aside.

Then with 2:53 left in OT, a pass that was sent out to the slot bounced off a Red Panther skate and slid into the net--before Bubla was able to react--for the game-winner.

*Unofficial stats* showed Roe with 27 saves for the Lynx, while Bubla stopped 25 shots for the Red Panthers.

The Lynx will take on Kettle Moraine Friday afternoon at 12:30pm at Ridder Arena in the championship game, while the Red Panthers will play Arrowhead at 5:00pm at the Super Rink for third place.
