Red Panthers race past Worthington in Schwan Cup opener

Seven first period goals lead to win

Point-Rapids Red Panthers got a hat trick from Makayla Lee and a pair of goals each from Sarah Peplinski, Brianne Huettner and Nicole Hassig in an 11-0 win over Worthington (MN) in the opening round game at the Schwan Cup at the Super Rink in Blaine, MN.

The Red Panthers scored seven times in the first 17 minutes and never looked back. Lee scored all three of her goals in the first, while Peplinski, Huettner, Rachel Metz, and Hassig also tallied in the period.

The Red Panthers held a huge 24-4 shot advantage in the stanza.

Amanda Milanowski made it 8-0 when she poked in a puck that was loose behind Trojans goalie Amanda Bristow at the 2:15 mark of the second.

Midway through the period, Huettner scored from the low right circle to make it 9-0, with an assist from Peplinski. Red Panthers held a 10-1 shot edge in the period.

Peplinski and Hassig scored in a span of 2:31 early in the third to conclude the scoring. Point-Rapids outshot Worthington 9-1 in the final period.

Metz and Molly Kuckkahn each chipped in two assists for the Red Panthers.

Emily Bubla earned her first varsity shutout while making six saves. Bristow was very busy on her end, stopping 32 shots.

The Red Panthers move to the semis, facing Middleton co-op at 8:30 Thursday evening. Worthington will take on Long Prairie co-op at 4:00pm Thursday.
