Ice Bears Smother Warbirds

The Eastern Shores Conference Tournament title game between the Bay Area Ice Bears and Warbirds was the second time the teams played this season. Bay Area won the first game earlier in the season 3-0, but the Warbirds were the only team in the conference to defeat USM and they did that twice.

Bay Area opened the scoring at 4:02 of the first with a power play goal by Emily Bill with the assist from Stacey Cloute. The Warbirds tied the game with 10:05 showing on the clock, when Allison Waara scored an unassisted goal. Bay Area was trying to kill off a penalty with 1:28 left in the period. They were not playing defensive and Rachel Beeck put a shorthanded goal in the net with Cloute getting her second assist at 15:56 of the first period. Bay Area led 2-1 at the end of 1.

The second period neither team was able to score with both teams killing off penalties. This included the Ice Bears having to kill off a 5-on-3 power play for 1:25 in the middle of the period.

The third period was owned by Bay Area. They limited the Warbirds to 3 shots on goal, while scoring two goals of their own. Julianne Bradford scored at 6:00 of the third with Emily Bill and Claire Bradford assisting. Twenty-eight seconds later, Faye Brunke scored with Sophie Gemignani and Kristina Kruse being credited with the assists.

Bay Area claimed the conference tournament championship with a 4-1 victory going into seeding Sunday.
