There are a lot of similarities between the Badgerland Conference Tournament two seed Fond du Lac and four seed Appleton United.

Fond du Lac came into their third place game tilt with an 11-10 record, Appleton came in 12-10. Neither team had a player this late in the season with 30 points. Blake Spies leads Fond du Lac with 23, and Ben Tomassetti leads Appleton with 29. And both of them sported sophomore goalies.

The goalies, it turns out, would be the stars of the matchup, shutting down the offensive opportunities of both sides, on the way to Fond du Lac edging out a 2-1 win in overtime.

Own Debbert of Appleton and Spencer Shober of Fond du Lac combined to stop all 15 shots they faced in the first period.

Their dominance continued through the second period until there were just 48 ticks left on the clock and Drake Deanovich took a feed form Jace Weber and put it in to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead going into the second intermission.

Appleton was having none of that though, as Ben Tomassetti roofed one on a feed from Connor Cooke to tie the game up with seven minutes left.

It went back to the goalie show, at the end of regulation, Debbert had 29 saves, and Shober had 22.

As is so often the case, it was a turnover that ended it though.  Appleton made a bad outlet pass in the defensive zone in overtime, and Ryan Marx took it and made a dirty dangle on Debbert to put in the game winner for the Cardinals.
