The Wisconsin Prep Hockey Game of the Week featured a Classic 8 matchup between the Brookfield Stars and USM Wildcats. The game was a sectional final from last season which USM won in double overtime. The Stars had never beaten USM ever coming into this game.

First period had nothing really to note as both teams were feeling each other out. USM had most of the possession and opportunities but nothing to really threaten Brookfield goalie Augustus Jones.

Second period starts and almost right away Brookfield gets a power play after a trip by USM. On this penalty kill, USM gets three shorthanded chances, but Brookfield was the first to strike. Colin Masek from the left dot scores under the glove of USM goalie Nolan Schenker. From there Brookfield took that momentum and had three scoring chances. One was a beautiful stack the pads save by Schenker. Another penalty puts Brookfield on another power play where Masek again scores. USM tried to keep momentum. Brookfield got a breakaway and Harrison Kennedy rings the pipe to keep it 2-0. USM would get one back as Jack McGregor from Tyler Cook to make it 2-1.Brookfield on the penalty kill then scores again. Colton Schneider dances through the defense and goes bar down. Scheckner’s night would end as Mason Grenier would step into the game. USM would start playing a physical game as they threw big hits. A hooking penalty would be called for a penalty shot But Grenier comes up big with a five hole save. To finish the period Brookfield scores from a rebound. Schneider shot from the point gets blocked with the traffic in front of the net and Adam Jensen catches Grenier still trying to find the puck. After an uneventful first, the second period had some action.

USM would put themselves into the box for the third just a couple of minutes in. The biggest scoring opportunity was for us as Jack McGregor took a backhand forehand deke but Jones made a great save to keep it 4-1. Brookfield thought they had a break away at the 10 minute mark but an impressive backcheck from McGregor stopped that. Brookefield would score again, Masek finishes his hat trick with a scramble in front of the net. USM would score their second goal with a backdoor tap in by Tyler Cook. USM kept the pressure trying to get the game in reach with 4:11 left. A penalty late in the game has USM on the powerplay. With some hard shot blocking and big defensive play Brookefield wins 5-2 for Brookfield’s first win ever over USM.

A slow start in the game led to an action pack second and third. Brookfield played fantastic with effort on all ends of the ice. Some big saves from Jones and a lot of effort leads to a big win for Brookfield. USM will look back at this game with a sour taste in their mouth as the score line doesn't flatter them. Masek was the star of the game with a hat-trick . Don't let Masek’s performance hide Colton Schneider's performance either. With a goal and assist he helped lead this team to their first ever win against USM.  August Jones has a performance to remember as he had a solid performance against a top four team in the state.
